TELUGU INSCRIPTIONS OF THE VIJAYANAGARA DYNASTY

No. 226.

Siripi, Kalyandrug Taluk, Anantapur District.

On the stone pedestal of the Nandi in the garbhagriha in the Isvara temple.. Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka [1]479, Pingala, ba. 30, Sivaratri corresponding to 1558 A.D., February 18, (Friday).

The inscription is damaged and registers a grant of land to god Somesvara of Siripi by Krishnappa-Nayaka Kondappa-Nayaka.

Guntakal, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a slab set up in front of the Krishnasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukti, Vaisakha su.15, corresponding to 1558 A.D., May 2.

It records a gift of the tyagavartana given by the mahajanas of Guntakallu of Poletimagani in Jagatapi-Gutti-sima to the gods Bhogesvara, Kesavaperumal and Viresvara of the same village by the Vipravinodins.

Vontimitta, Sidhavatam Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a slab set up near the eastern gopura of the

Kodandaramasvamin temple. Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukt, Ashadha su. 12, Monday, corresponding to 1558 A.D. June 27.

The inscription records a gift of the village Vontimetta with its hamlets in Sidhavatam-sima of Udayagiri-rajya to god Raghunayaka of the same village said to have been consecrated by Jambavanta, by Nagarajayyadeva-maharaju of Kasyapa-gotra, and Surya-vamsa and the son-in-law of Ramarajayya and Gutti Yara-Tirumalarajayyadeva-maharaju of Kasyapa-gotra, and Surya-vamsa and the son-in-law of Ramarajayya and Gutti Yara-Tirumala rajayyadeva-maharaju, sons of Srirangaraju and the grandsons of Araviti Ramaraju of Atreya-gotra and Soma-vamsa. The gift village was situated in Siddhavatam-sima which the donor appears to have held as his nayankara.

Paruchuru, Bapatla Taluk, Guntur District.

On a pillar in the temple of Bhimesvara.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukti, Ashadha ba. 30, Monday, corresponding to 1558 A.D. July 15. The week-day, however, was Friday.

This damaged epigraph refers to a sarvamnya gift to god Bhimesvara of Paruchuru by Gulappa-nayanigaru, the karyakarta of Mahamandalesvara Ramarajayya.

On a rock in a field to the east of the village..

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukti, Sravana ba. 1, corresponding to 1558 A.D., July 31.

This damaged epigraph seems to record the gift of some sarvamanya at Sompalle, under the orders of the king and the direction of [Rama]rajayya. Mentions Penugonda-sima.

On a slab lying before the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukti, Sravana ba. 3, Monday, corresponding to 1558 A.D., August 1, f.d.t. ’46.

It records the undertaking given by the kampus, karanas and the mera-gandlu of Daggumbadu to Savaram Gulappa-nayaka, the karyakartta of Aliya Ramarajayya, to endow land to Daggambati Siddappa for conducting specified offerings to god Kesavanatha.

On a stone near the Tirumalaraya temple on the hill near the village.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is Saka 14[80], Kalayukti, Asvija su. 1, corresponding to 1558 A.D., September 13, (Tuesday). The name of the king and the date only can be read. The rest of the record is very much damaged.

Palem, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone lying in the prakara of the Vemula Venkatesvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1481, (current) Kalayukti, Asvija su. 15, lunar eclipse corresponding to 1558 A.D., September 27, Tuesday, ’27.

It records a gift of half the village of Murtirayapuram to god Vithaladeva excluding the other half of it which was already an agrahara granted to the Brahmanas, by Vithalarajayyadeva-maharaju, grandson of Kandanavoli Ramaraju of Atreya-gotra and soma-vamsa for the merit of his parents Murtiraju and Tirumalamma. The gift village is said to be situated in Pennakacherla-sima of Jagatapigutti-rajya which the donor is stated to have obtained as nayankara from the king.

On a stone set up in front of the Krishnasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 14[80], Kalayukti, Kartika su. 12, corresponding to 1558 A.D., October 24.

It records a gift of land to the mannevaru, melavaru, nagasvaralavaru and uyyalasevavaru for services in the temple of Kesavaperumal in Guntakallu in Gutti-sima by Mahamandalesvara Madraju Vallabhayya. Gutti-sima is said to have been held by the donor as nayankara from Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Tirumalarajadeva-maharaju.

Pedda Ahobalam, Sirvel Taluk, Kurnool District..

On a slab set up near the sixteen-pillared mandapa on the way to upper Ahobalam.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 14[80], Kalayukt, Margasirsha su. 3, corresponding to 1558, A.D., November 13, (Sunday).

It records the grant of a piece of land and some money by Emberumanar-Jiyyamgaru, the mudrakarta of Vam Sathagopa-Jiyyamgaru and others for conducting certain festivals when god Ahobalesvara was seated in the 16 pillared mandapa constructed by Mahamandalesvara Kurucheti Timmaraju, son of Vobulraju and grandson of Baichana-Devachoda-maharaju of the solar race, when the god was taken (in procession) to Diguva Tirupati and back to the temple (nagaru).

On a slab lying near the Kalavapalle-Amma temple.

Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukti, Magha ba. 14, Sivaratri, corresponding to 1559, A. D, February 6, Monday, 30.

It records the gift of the income from the taxes (varttana) maharacha-teva etc., from certain villages in Ramagiridurga-sima in Udayagiri-Marjavada in Penugonda, to the goddess Ankalamma of Kaluvapalle by Mahamandalesvara Jillela Krishnamarajayya-Vengalraju.

Sompalem, Madanapalli Taluk, Chittoor District.

On the south wall of the Kota Chaudesvari temple.

Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480, Kalayukti, Magha ba. 14, Sivaratri, corresponding to 1559 A.D., January 6, Monday ’30.

It records the gift of the alugu-rukalu out of the maharacha-tevalu collected in Sompalle-agrahara in Ramagiri-durga in Penugonda-Marjavada and udayagiri-Marjavada to goddess Chavumdesvaramma of Sompalle, by Mahamandalesvara Jillella Krishnamarajayya-Vengalaraju.

Kurmayi, Palamner Taluk, Chittoor District.

On the east wall of the central shrine in the Varadaraja-Perumal temple.

Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

The inscription is dated Saka 14[8]2 (current), Siddharthin, Vaisakha su. 2. corresponding to 1559 A.D., April 9, (Sunday).

It records the re-grant of the archanavritti to the four sthanikas of the temple of Varadaraja of Kurumavi in Pulinati-sima since the dues of the endowment ceased to be remitted into the temple.

No. 239.

Pushpagiri, Cuddapah Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a pillar at the entrance into the Umamahesvara shrine in the Santana Mallesvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1481, Siddharthin, Ashadha, ba. 12, corresponding to 1559, A.D., July 2.

It records a gift of land in the village Ambavaram, to god Channaraya to Pushpagiri by Koneti Tiruvengalanathayya, son of Peda-Tirumalayyangar, and grandson of Tallapaka Annamayyangar of Bharadvaja-gotra, Asvalayana-sutra and Rik-sakha. The village is said to have been obtained by the donor as a gift from the king.

(A. R. No. 311 of 1922.)

Vyapulapalle, Hamlet of Mudivedu, Madanapalle Taluk, Chittoor District.

On a rock in the village. Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1481, Siddharthin, Sravana ba. 12 Friday corresponding to 1559 A.D., July 31. The weekday, however, was Monday.

It registers a gift of wet and dry lands to god Lakshminarasimha at Ramagiridurga by Jillela Vengalayyadeva-maharaju, son of Krishnamaraju and grandson of Peda-Krishnamaraju of Kasyapa-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha. The gift lands are stated to be situated in Vempalapalli in the village of Mudivada in Vailipati-sima belonging to Ramagiridurga of Penugonda-Marjavada which the donor is said to have obtained as amara from Ramaraju Tirumalarajayyadeva-maharaju.

Manesandra, Hindupur Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a slab set up near a well. Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

The record is dated in Saka 1481, Siddharthin, Bhadirapada ba. 11 corresponding to 1559 A.D., August 13, Sunday.

It registers a gift of their vartana in the village by the vipravinodins of Manneya-samudra alias Devarayapuram-agraharam to god Hanumanta of the village situated in Roda-nadu, a district of Penugonda-rajya for the merit o their community.

No. 242.

(A. R. No. 485 of 1915.)

Kallubhavi, Adoni Taluk, Bellary District.

On the east wall of the mandapa in front of the central shrine of the Anjaneya temple.

Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1481, Siddharthin, Asvija su. 15, [Sunday]. In Siddharthin, corresponding to Saka 1481 there was an intercalary month in Asvayuja which is not indicated in the record. Taking the month to be Abhika Asvayuja in which there was lunar eclipse on the tithi specified, the details may be equated with 1559 A.D., September 16, which was, however, a Saturday.

Mentions Kallabhavi and Jamgama Virayya. The epigraph is very much damaged and the details of the grant are lost.

Sangala, Dharmavaram Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a broken slab lying in front of the Durgamma shrine.

Sadasiva, 1559 A.D.

The record is dated Siddharthin, the other details being lost.

This damaged epigraph records a grant (details lost) by the Vipravinodins to the vidvanmahajanas of Sangala alias Vijayabhupatipuram in Chiramagani in Guitti-rajya.

Gooty, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a slab set up in the prakara of the Ramasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1560 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1483 (current), Raudri, vaisakha su. 15, corresponding to 1560 A.D., May 9.

It records that the seruvagandlu headed by Ramayya and other servants, residing in the fort of Gutti, agreed to contribute annually a specified amount per head and make over the sum to Venkatayya Ayyavaru, a resident of Gautamagiri and attached to the matha for the merit of Yara Timmarajayya.

Cheruvu-Belagallu, Kurnool Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab set up near the Rajarajesvarasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1560 A.D.

This is record is dated Saka 1482, Raudri, Sravana su. 5, corresponding to 1560 A.D., July 27, (Saturday).

It registers a gift of six varahas out of an income of fourteen varahas accruing from the tolls from the Balija community of the village Kere-Belagallu in Adavani-sima to god Rajarajesvara of the place by Jinnarasu, son of Sunkara Savantigiri Narasayya for the merit of his chief Mahamandalesvara Siddhiraju Rangarajayya who had granted the donor the right to collect the local taxes. It records another gift to the gods Rajarajesvara and Virabhadra in the year Durmati by Sunkara Pitambarayya. This is followed by other gifts also by the gaudu-prajas, the talari, the mahanadu and the oil pressers.

Markapur, Markapur Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the north side of the antarala-mandapa of the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1560 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1481 (mistake for 1482), Raudri, Margasira su. 12, corresponding to 1560 A.D., November 29.

It records that Yemberuman Jiyyangaru and Kadirinathapa, the karyakartta of Mahamandalesvara Sidhiraju Timmaraju, Venkatayya, the rachakaranam, the mannevaru and others conferred upon the Kandacharamvaru and the temple servants numbering altogether 90 persons, revised rate of remuneration for their duties in the temple, after setting apart 88 varahas for the temple out of its total income of 520 varahas.

Haligera, Alur Taluk, Bellary District.

On a slab set up in the Anjaneyasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1560 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1482, Raudri, Margasira ba. 6, corresponding to 1560 A.D., December 8, (Sunday).

It seems to register the gift of the income in cash and grains from the villages Haligera and others included in Adavani-durga by Srirangaraju, son of Mahamandalesvars Siddhiraju Avubhalaraju to the temple of Kesavaperumal for the merit of his parents for conducting a feeding house to the itinerant brahmanas who used the military road. The donor seems to have obtained the villages granted as amara-umbali from Venkatadri.

(a furlong to the south-east of the Narasimhasvamin temple).

This is dated Saka 1482, Raudri, Pushya su. 12, corresponding to 1560 A.D., December 29 (Sunday).

It registers the purchase of a piece of land for 200 varahas from the temple treasury and gift of income derived from it for conducting the festivals in the mandapa in front of the Prahladavarada temple at Diguva Tirupati to god Ahobalesvara by Mahamandalesvara Gopinatharaju, son of Goparaju and grandson of Juturi Bhatraju of the lunar race Atreya-gotra, Apastamba-sutra, and Yajus-sakha.

Sekuru, Guntur Taluk, Guntur District.

On a stone lying in front of the Somesvarasvamin temple in the village.

Sadasiva, 1561 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1482, Raudri, Magha su. 11, corresponding to 1561 A.D., January 27, (Monday).

It registers the grant of a khandika in Sekuru included in Kondavitisima to god Tiruvenkatesvara at sekuru, by Vengalappa for the merit at Siddhiraju Timmarajayya from whom the donor had obtained the Kondavidu-sima as nayankara.

This is dated Saka 1482, Raudri, Magha su. 11 corresponding to 1561 A.D. January 27, (Monday).
