TELUGU INSCRIPTIONS OF THE VIJAYANAGARA DYNASTY

No. 126.

(A. R. No. 177 of 1913.)

Bukkapatnam, Penukonda Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a slab set up in the Lakshminarayanasvamin temple.

Achyuta, 1542 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1464, Subhakrit, Chaitra ba. 6, Wednesday, corresponding to 1542 A.D. April 5.

It registers the remission of taxes on marriages and the taxes on the earnings of Brahmanas for the merit of the king. Ramabhatlayya issued the orders and Peddirajayya conveyed them to the Reddis and Karanams of the village of Krottacheruvu.

No. 127.

Gopavaram, Proddatur Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a mutilated slab set up in the middle of the village.

Sadasiva, 1542 A.D.

This is dated in Saka 1464, Subhakrit, Kartika su. 12, corresponding to 1542 A.D., October 20 (Friday).

It records a gift of land in Gopavaram alias Sathagopapuram to Narayanayyangaru of Kasyapa-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha, by Appangaru, son of Kandala Devarajacharya of Vadhula-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha. The village Gopavaram which is said to have been obtained as a gift by the donor from the king was situated in Ramesvaram-Podaturu of Ghandikota-sima in Udayagiri-rajya.

Bollavaram, hamlet of Proddaturu, Proddatur Taluk, Cuddappah District.

On a slab lying in the Gopalasvamin temple. Sadasiva, 1542 A.D.

This is dated Sobhakrit, Nija-Sra[vana]. The other details are lost. As the gift was made on the occasion of Krishnashtami, the tithi and the date may be equated to 1543, August 23, Wednesday.

It registers the grant of tolls (penta-sunkham) of the village Bollavaram in Guddaluri-sima by Papa Timmayadeva-maharaju, son of Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Timmaraju of lunar race and Atreya-gotra to god Gopikanatha-Perumal for offerings on the occasion of Krishnashtami. Guddaluri-sima is said to be the nayankara territory of the donor.

Kovelakuntla, Koilkuntla Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab set up in front of the Ankalamma temple. Sadasiva, 1543 A.D.

The is is dated Saka 1465, Sobhakrit, Nija-Sravana ba. 10., corresponding to 1543 A.D., August 25 (Saturday).

It registers the grant of income derived from svamyatas in his nayankara territory of Kovilakuntla-sima for the cherapu (sirappu) and paruventa festivals of the goddess Ahankalamma by Mahamandalesvara Nandyala Avubhalesvaradeva Maharaju, son of Singarayyadeva Maharaju and the grandson of Narasingayyadeva Maharaju of the lunar race and Atreya-gotra.

Markapur, Markapur Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the east wall of the antarala-mandapa of the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.,

This is dated Saka 1466 (current), Sobhakrit, Magha su. 11, Bhishma-ekadasi corresponding to 1544 A.D., February 4, (Monday), ’67.

It registers a gift of the village Tarnubadu alias Raghupatirajapuram situated in Kochcherlakota-sima to god Chennakesava and to the Srivaishnavas by Aubhalayyadeva-maharaju, son of Mahamandalsvara Nandyala Singarayyadeva-maharaju of Soma-vamsa and Atreya-gotra. The donor is said to have obtained Kochcherlakota-sima as nayankara from the king.

Kosuvaripalli, Madanapalli Taluk, Chittoor District.

On the south wall of the mandapa in the Venkataramanasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1465, Sobhakrit, Magha ba. 12, corresponding to 1544 A.D., February 20, (Wednesday) ’02.

It records the gift of some lands probably situated in the village Yalavaruru in Vavilipati-sima in Penugonda-marjavada, to god Tiruvengalanatha of Kosuvaripalli, by Mahanayankacharya komara Venkatappa-nayaka, son of Kambham Timmanayani-Venkatadri-nayaka.

No. 132.

Kotapadu, Koilkuntla Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab set up in front of the chavadi.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Kartika su. 12, corresponding to 1544 A.D., October 27, (Monday).

It records the remission of taxes such as srotriyam, katnam, kanike etc., payable to the palace by the mahajanas of Kotapadu and Kesinenipalle in Avuku-sima and the grant of these villages as sarvamanya by Mahamandalesvara China Timmayyadeva Maharaju, son of Timmaraju, grandson of Ramaraju and great-grandson of Araviti Bukkaraju of Atreya-gotra and Soma-vamasa, under orders of the king. The donor is said to have held Avuku-sima as his nayankara.

Akumalla, Koilkuntla Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab set up on a platform at the entrance into the village.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Kartika su. 12, corresponding to 1544 A.D., October 27, (Monday).

It registers the remission of all taxes such as srotriyam, katnam etc., payable to the palace by the mahajanas of the village Akumalla in Avuku-sima held by him as nayankara from the king by Mahamandalesvara China-Timmayyadeva-Maharaju, son of Timmaraju, grandson of Ramaraju and the great-grandson of Araviti Bukkaraju of the Atreya-gotra and Soma-vamasa.

Gajarampalli, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone lying near the Isvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.,

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Kartika su. 12, corresponding to 1544 A.D., October 27 (Monday).

It records the remission of the barber’s tax and other levies such as siddhayam, kanika etc., Gajaramapalle-agraharam in Gutti-durgam by Rayalu Ramaraju.

On a stone by the side of the Virabhadra temple.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.

This is dated Saka 14[66], Krodhin, Kartika su. 12, corresponding to 1544 A.D., October 27 (Monday).

It records the remission of mangali-pannu, sidhayam etc., in Miduturu on the barbers in Pulleti-magani included in Gutti-durgam, by Alludu Ramaraju.

Guntakal, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone built into the west wall of the Krishnasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.

This is dated in the cyclic year Krodhin, Kartika su. 12. The year Krodhin falling within the reign of Sadasiva corresponds to Saka 1466 and the details may be equated to 1544 A.D., October 27, (Monday).

The record is badly damaged and seems to refer to some grant made in the Guntakanti-sima.

Kolimigundla, Koilkuntla Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab near the eastern wall of the Anjaneyasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1544 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Kartika ba. 12, corresponding to 1544 A.D., November 12, (Wednesday).

It registers the remission of taxes granted to the vidvanmahajanas of Kolimigudla in his nayankara territory of avuku-sima by Mahamandalesvara China-Timmayadeva-Maharaju of the lunar race and Atreya-gotra and the grandson of Arviti Bukkaraya at the instance of the king.

Mopuru, Pulivendla Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a slab set up in front of the central shrine of the Bhairavesvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Magha su. 7, Rathasaptami, Monday, corresponding to 1545 A.D., January 19, ’50.

It records the remission of all taxes like durgavartana, danayanivartana, bedige, kanika and others in favour of the Vidvan mahajanas of the villages belonging to temples and to agraharas in Ghandikota-Sakali-sima obtained by the donor, Timmayadeva-maharaju, son of Narasingayadeva-maharaju and grandson of Mahamandalesvara Nandyala Avubhaladeva-maharaju of Atreya-gotra and Soma-vamsa as nayankara from the king. A similar remission of these taxes in the villages granted to the Bhairavesvara temple of Mopura is also recorded with the stipulation that the amount accrued was to be utilized for the daily worship and the rathosvava of the god.

Kandlaguduru, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a slab set up in front of the Anjaneya temple.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Magha su. 15, corresponding to 1545 A.D., January 27 (Tuesday).

This damaged record seems to register a gift of land and income derived from the boyi-sunkam by Mahamandalesvara Annemaraju Viraya Boyidu. The gift land lay in Pusalapadu which was included in Jagatapigutti-sima and which was given to the dones as magani by Ramaraja Yaratimmarajaya.

No. 141.

Hampi, Hospet Taluk, Bellary District.

To the left of the entrance into the deserted mandapa to

the west of the central shrine of the Vitthalasvamin temple. Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Magha ba. 13, Hasta, Tuesday, corresponding to 1545 A.D, February 9. The weekday, however, was Monday, the nakshatra being Sravana.

It records that Mahamandalesvara Chikkaraju, son of Srirangaraju of Jambaladinne bought two vrittis out of the 150 ganasamkhya-vrittis in Kerahalli renamed Achyutarayasamudram in Guddam-Gangavati-sima endowed by Bokkasam Peddinayaka from Chamnaya, son of Gopaya of Borugada for 75 ghatti varahas which he remitted into the treasury of god Lakshminarayana-perumal in the temple of Vitthalesvara as an endowment for daily worship of the god. The donor is said to have been the disciple of Kandala Srirangacharya of Kandanavolu.

Veparlaparti, Kalyanadurg Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone lying near the ruined temple of Rangasvamin.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1466, Krodhin, Phalguna su. 11 corresponding to 1545 A.D., February 22, (Sunday).

It registers the grant of tax at the rate of a mada and a dharana per month for maintaining a perpetual lamp for god Tiruvengalanatha of Vepalapariti by Sumkara Rami-setti for the merit of Mahanayankacharya Kumdrurpi Kondala-nayaka.

Kamalapuram, Hospet Taluk, Bellary District.

On the wall opposite to the image of Anjaneya in a ruined temple near the elephant stables.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1467, Visvavasu, Chaitra su. 3, Thursday corresponding to 1545 A.D., March 15. The week-day, however, was Sunday.

It records that Mahamandalesvara Timmaraju, son of Vallabharaju and grandson of Madaraju Mallaraju had the rangamandapam to the god Madhava built to the west of the big bazaar street for the merit of his parents Vallabharaju and Vengalamma.

Gandikota, Jammalamadugu Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On the south wall of the prakara of the ruined temple of Ranganayaka.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1467, Visvavasu, Chaitra su. 9, Saturday, Sriramajayanti, corresponding to 1545 A.D., March 21, ’98.

It records a gift, the details of which are not specified, to god Raghunatha of Ghandikota which is said to have been obtained as nayankara from the king by the donor Nandyala Timmayadeva-maharaju, son of Narasingayyadeva-maharaju and grandson of Mahamandalesvara Nandyala Avubalesvaradeva-maharaju of Soma-vamsa, Atreya-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha.

No. 145.

(A. R. No. 376 of 1926.)

Tangeda, Palnad Taluk, Guntur District.

On a slab set up in front of the deserted temple of Sitaramasvamin in the fort.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1467, Visvavasu, Vaisakha su. 5, Thursday, corresponding to 1545 A.D., April 16.

It registers the exemption from taxes on the vrittis granted to the gods and brahmanas in Tangeda-sima by Mahamandalesvara Nandyala Avubhalaraju who was administrating over the sima. States that Papineningaru, the karyakarta of the chief had this inscription set up.

No. 146.

Yerragudi, Kalyandurg Taluk, Anatapur District.

On a slab lying in front of the Ramesvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1545 A.D.

This is dated Saka 146[7], Visvavasu, Asvija su. 15, corresponding to 1545 A.D., September 20, (Sunday).

It registers the grant of wet and dry lands for offerings and a perpetual lamp in the temple of Ramayadeva at Yeragudi by Bhupatiraya, the agent of Krishnappa-nayaka. Yaragudi is stated to be situated in Budigumma-sima held as amara by the donor.

No. 147.

Kalamalla, Kamalapuram Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On two faces of a pillar lying outside the prakara of the Chennakesava temple.

Sadasiva, 1546 A.D.

The record is dated Saka 1469 (current), Parabhava, Chaitra su. 11, corresponding to 1546 A.D. March 13, (Saturday).

The inscription records a remission of tax on the barbers of Kalumalla in Pulivindala-sima, given to Kondoju, son of Mangala Timmoju of Kandanavolu by Mahamandalesvara Tirumalayyadeva-maharaju of Yaragudi on the orders of Ramarajayya in conformity with the royal remission of this tax all over the kingdom.

Chilamakuru, Kamalapuram Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On two faces of a pillar set up close to the south wall of the Anjaneya temple.

Sadasiva, 1546 A.D.

The record is dated Saka 1469 (current), Parabhava, Chaitra su. 11 corresponding to 1546 A.D. March 13, (Saturday).

Records the remission of taxes on barbers in the three villages Chilumakuru, Sirigirirajapalli and Agraharam by Naladimmaraju of Chemgalamari under the orders of Ramarajayya.

Mutukuru, Pulivendala Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a slab built into the platform in front of the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1546 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1469, Parabhava, Chaitra su. 11, Monday, corresponding to 1546 A.D., March 13. The year was current. The week-day, however, was Saturday.

It records the remission of mangalapannu, dommaripannu, and vetti-vemulu of Muttukuru, a village belonging to the temple of Tiruvengalanatha and situated in Ghandikota-sima, under the orders of ramarajayya to Kondoju, son of Kandanavoli Timmoju by Baicharaju Timaraju.

Nasanakota, Dharmavaram Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a rock by the road-side about a furlong to the north of the village.

Sadasiva, 1546 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1[4]68, Parabhava, Jyeshtha su. 10, corresponding to 1546 A.D., May 10, (Monday).

It registers the remission of taxes on barbers in the Bhamdaravada and Devagrama agraharas in the nayankara territory of Nasanakota-sthala by Kotappa-nayaka at the instance of Aliya-Ramappayya.
