TELUGU INSCRIPTIONS OF THE VIJAYANAGARA DYNASTY

No. 201.

(A. R. No. 161 of 1905.)

Markapur, Markapur Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the east wall, left of entrance, of the antarala-mandapa in the Chennakesavasvamin temple. Sadasiva, 1555 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1476, Ananda, Magha su. 7, corresponding to 1555 A.D., January 29.

It records a gift of the various toll incomes due from the 18 villages, viz., Marakarapuram, Channavaram, Konddapuram, Yachavaram, Rayavaram, Gonguladinna, Tarnumbadu, Surepalli, Vanalapuram, Chanareddipalle, Gangireddipalle, Korevanipalle, Medisettipalle, Gollapalle, Jammuladinna, Tellambadu, Kamalpuram and Kondapalli to god Chennakesava by Mahamandalesvara Madraju Narappadeva-maharaju, son of Aubhalayyadeva-maharaju, grandson of Mahamandalesvara Madraju Singarayyadeva-maharaju, of Kasyapa-gotra and Surya-vamsa, and nephew of Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Tirumalayyadeva-maharaju of Atreya-gotra and Soma-vamsa. The gift villages are said to be situated in Kochcherlakota-sima which was held by the donor as nayankara from the king. Records in addition that the lanjasunkham (levy on prostitutes) collected during the festivals at Marakapuram was also made over to the temple and that fie out of every six dishes of offerings to the deity, were to be made over to the satra (feeding house) for feeding paradesi brahmanas of the smartta sect, the sixth dish being the share of the sthanikas, the adhikaris and the karanas.

Yerratimmarayacheruvu, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone in a field to the east of the village.

Sadasiva, 1555 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1477, Rakshasa, Chaitra ba. 12, corresponding to 1555 A.D., April 18 (Thursday).

It seems to register certain gift (details lost) to god Virupaksha of the agrahara village Narasapuram alias Krishnarayapuram in Pulleti-magani in Jagtapi-Gutti-sima by the son (name lost) of Yeramaraju of Bharadvaja-gotra, Aapastamba-sutra and Rik-sakha. Mentions mantramurti Basvaya and Govindaya as signatories.

Betapalli, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone set up in front of the Timmaraja temple.

Sadasiva, 1555 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1477, Rakshasa, Vaisakha su. 1, Sunday corresponding to 1555 A.D., April 21, f.d.t. ’10.

It records the gift of income derived from vipravinodivarttana by the vipravinodins Mantramurti Basavaya and Govindayya to god Venkatadri in Betapalle alias Gorajapuram, a sarvamanya-agrahara in Puletimagani of Jagatapi-gutti-sima.

Ellamanda, Narasarowpet Taluk, Guntur District.

On a boulder near the vagu.

Sadasiva, 1555 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1477, Rakshasa, Sravana su. 11, Thursday, corresponding to 1555 A.D., July 30 which was Tuesday.

It seems to refer to the fixation of certain levies to be paid by the residents of the village Yallamanda in Kondavidu-sima by Siddhiraju Timmarajayya on behalf of Mahamandalesvara Yara Tirumalarajayya.

No. 205.

Chinna Ahobalam, Sirvel Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the west wall of the Narasimhasvamin shrine in the Narasimhasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1555 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1478 (current), Rakshasa, Sravana ba. 7 corresponding to 1555 A.D., August 9 (Friday).

The record is damaged and fragmentary. It seems to register a gift (of land) to god Ahobala Narasimha by Ghanapatideva-maharaju who belonged to the Kasyapa-gotra Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha and was the son of Nandiraju and the grandson of Mahamandalesvara Krishnaraju of the solar race.

Nagalapuram, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone lying in front of the Anjaneya shrine.

Sadasiva, 1555 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1777, apparently wrong for Saka 1477, Rakshasa, Asvija, su. 2 corresponding to 1555 A.D., September 17 (Tuesday).

This damaged record seems to register a gift of the village Etividu alias Nagalapuram for provision of rice, green-gram and oil for the lamp for the Karttika festivals in the temple of Siva (name not clear) for the merit of the Setti-Pattasvamins, the ganacharyas, etc., the disciples of Bhikshavritti-maharaya.

The gift village is stated is stated to be situated in Jagatanigutti-sima ruled over by Mahamandalesvara Srirangarajayyadeva-maharaju.

No. 207.

Obulapuram near Khadarpeta Gooty taluk, Anantapur District.

On a rock in the water course. Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1478 (current), Rakshasa, Pushya ba. 30, Ardhodaya, Sunday when Sravana-nakshatra commenced at ’22 of the day fulfilling the conditions for ardhodaya. The details correspond to 1556 A.D., January 12.

It records a gift of the vipravinodi-varttana due from the agrahara villages devarapalle in Gutti-sima and Jambuladinna in Pennakajerla by Chemnayya, son of Vipravinodi Chernuri Kesavaya to god Doda Avubhaladeva for the dasami festivals.

Santaravuru, Bapatla Taluk, Guntur District.

On a stone set up outside the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1477, Rakshasa, Magha su. 15, corresponding to 1556 A.D., January 26, (Sunday).

It registers a gift of the income derived from panta-sunkam collected in the nayankara village of Santaravuru to the local deities Chennaraya and Ramayalinga by Maha-mandalesvara Ramarajau-china-Srirangarajau-Jaggarajayyadeva-maharaju.

No. 209.

Chinnahoturu, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone set up in the village.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Vaisakha su. 15 corresponding to 1556 A.D., April 24.

The inscription is fragmentary and records the gift of income derived from the tyagavarttana collected from the sarvamanya-agrahara village of Pinahoturu alias Devarayapuram in Vurokonda-venthya of Rayadurga-rajya for the Dhanurmasa-worship of god Chennakesava of Hoturu, by the Vipravinodins Rudraya, his son Govindaya and Vallabhaya.

Rayadrug, Tayadrug Taluk, Bellary District.

On the walls of the central shrine of the Madhavarayasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Jyeshtha su. 15, corresponding to 1556 A.D., May 24 (Sunday), ’29, when there was a lunar eclipse.

Records that Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Vitthalaraju Tirumalayyadeva-maharaju who is said to have obtained Rayadurga-sima as nayankara from the king, remitted the taxes unjustly collected in the agraharas as gifts to the temples in the respective agraharas from which they were collected. These gifts were made on the full-moon day of Maha Vaisakha.

Kudluru, Rayadrug Taluk, Bellary District.

On a slab set up in front of the Hanuman temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

This is dated Saka 147[8], Nala, Jyeshtha su. 15, corresponding to 1556 A.D., May 24, Sunday (lunar eclipse).

The inscription records the grant of Kudluru alias Reddirajapuram comprising of the villages Katepalle and Muddalapuram situated in Rayadurgam-sima by Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju-Vitthalaraja-Tirumalayyadeva-Maharaju for the merit of Vitthalarajayya. The grant was made actually a month earlier in Vaisakha as indicated in the text. Rayadurgam-sima in which the grant village lay was obtained by the donor as his nayankara territory.

No. 212.

(A. R. No. 454 of 1923.)

Bhupatisamudram, Rayadrug Taluk, Bellary District.

On a stone lying in a tamarind grove in the village.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The inscription is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Jyeshtha su. 15, corresponding to 1556 A.D., May 24, (Sunday). There was a lunar eclipse on this day.

It records that on the complaint of the villagers, Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Vittalaraja Tirumalarajayyadeva Maharaja stopped the illegal collections of money in Yelahanji, Somalapuram, etc., by the Hasanidyagandlu and directed that the fines, etc., collected in the village should be utilized for repairing temples, tanks etc., Dakshinamurti-sivacharya is mentioned as the donee. As in No. 212 above, the grant appears to have been made a month earlier in Vaisakha.

Yelanji, Rayadrug Taluk, Bellary District.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The record is dated 14[7]8, Nala, Jyeshtha su. 15 corresponding to 1556 A.D. May 24, (Sunday). There was a lunar eclipse on this day.

Gajarampalli, Gooty Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone lying beside the Isvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The record is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Ashadha ba. 13 corresponding to 1556 A.D. July 4, Saturday.

This damaged epigraph mentions several individuals such as Vijayanagaram Chinna-Virayya, Kalyanam Virayya, Jamgam Virayya etc., who together seem to have made some gift to god Rama of Rayasamudram. Mentions Gajaramanipalle and Jagatapigutti-sima.

Chauluru, Hindupur Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a stone set up near the Anjaneya temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The record is dated Saa 1478, Nala, Asvija, su. 2 corresponding to 1556 A.D., September 5.

It registers a gift obviously to the vipravinodi-varttana in favour of God Hanumantaraya of Chauturu to the mahajanas of Chauturu alias Timmasamudram in Renadu of Penugonda-rajya by the Vipravinodins belonging to various sakhas and sutras.

No. 216.

Gudi-Obalapura, Hospet Taluk, Bellari District.

On a rock to the east of the Kalasapura

Anjaneya temple on the Kamalapur-Kampli road.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The record is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Kartika, su. 12 Thursday, corresponding to 1556 A.D., October 15.

It records a gift of land made by Mahamandalesvara Raghunatharajadeva-Maharaja, son of Tirumalaraju and grandson of Araviti-Ramaraju-Rangaraju of the lunar race Atreya-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha, to (the temple of) Ananda-Bhairava near Kalasapuram, which is stated to be the amara fief of Machiraju.

No. 217.

Hampi, Hospet Taluk, Bellary District.

On both sides of the entrance into a ruined

temple of Vishnu near the Kodandaramasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The record is dated in Saka 1478, Nala, Kartika su. 12, Friday corresponding to 1556 A.D., October 15, Thursday (not Friday).

It records the obeisance of the merchant Tirumala-setti, son of Papi-setti and Patamma and grandson of Appi-setti of Kodandarishi-gotra to god Venkatesa residing at the Chakra-tirtha. An ashtaka describing the deity in his Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama and Kodandarama incarnations is appended to the record.

Rayadrug, Rayadrug Taluk, Bellary District.

On a slab set up in front of the Madhavarayasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

The record is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Kartika ba. 30, solar eclipse correctly to 1556 A.D., November 2, Monday.

The inscription records a gift of the village Baginayanipalle alias Madhavarayapuram to the north of Rayadurga-venthiyam in Rayadurga-sima, to god Madhavesvara of Rayagiri by Krishnamaraju, son of Vithalaraju of the Aravidu family. Rayadurga-sima was held by the donor as nayankara from the king.

Nandaluru, Rajampet Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a slab set up near the inner gopura of the Saumyanathasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1556 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1478, Nala, Pushya ba. 12, Monday, Makara-sankramana corresponding to 1556 A.D., December 28.

It records a gift of wet lands in the villages Nelandaluru, Paturu, Adupuru, Tangaturu, Poladaluru, Opili, Tallapaka, Gundluru and Utukuru to god Chokkanatha, by Timmasani, daughter of Jakkula Tippa-battudu.

No. 220.

Kalamalla, Kamalapuram Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On two faces of a slab set up close to the east wall

of the Anjaneya shrine of the Chennakesava temple.

Sadasiva, 1557 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1479, Pingala, Vaisakha su. 3, Friday, corresponding to 1557 A.D., April 2, 27.

It registers a gift to go Chennakesava of Kelumala by Rachiraju, son of Mahamandalesvara Madhavaraju Narparaju. The record is fragmentary and the details of the gift are lost.

No. 221.

(A. R. No. 333 of 1922.)

Kosuvaripalle, Madanapalli Taluk, Chittoor District.

On the east prakara of the Venkataramanasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1557 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1479, Pingala, Nija-Jyeshtha su. 12, corresponding to 1557 A.D., June 8.

This damaged epigraph seems to record an endowment of the income from the villages Kosuvaripalli, Godugubba, Mudalidoddi etc., towards provisions for various offerings to god Mallikarjuna of Kosuvaripalle by Umapati, the karyakarta of Mahamandalesvara Murtirajau Vithaladeva-maharaju.

Nandalur, Rajampet Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On a slab lying in the flower garden of the Saumyanathasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1557 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1490, Pingala, Ashadha ba. 11. The cyclic year Pingala corresponded to Saka 1479 (not 1490) and the details of the date viz., Ashadha, ba 11 may be equated to 1557 A.D., July 22, (Thursday).

The inscription records a gift of land in Kadapa-sima situated in Ghandikota-sima of Uddagiri-rajya, to god Chokkanatha of Nelandaluru, by Obularaju, son of Mahamandalesvara Nandyala Aubhalraju. Ghandikota-sima in Uddagiri-rajya is said to have been obtained by the donor as nayankara from the king.

Vangipuram, Bapatla Taluk, Guntur District.

On the Garuda pillar set up in front of the temple of Vallabharaya.

Sadasiva, 1557 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1478, Pingala, Sravana ba. 8. If the Saka year quoted is a mistake for 1479, the details correspond to 1557 A.D., August 17, (Tuesday)

It refers to the construction of the mukha-mandapa and the eastern gopura of the temple of Srivallabharaya at Vangipuram in the Kondaviti-sima and records grant of land made to it by Mahamandalesvara Apratikamall Kurucheti Murttirajayyadeva-choda-maharaja, who was a subordinate of Mahamandalesvara Ramaraja Yaradirumalarajayyadeva-maharaju. The god is described as the lord of Ahichchatrapuri.

Gandikota, Jammalamadugu Taluk, Cuddapah District.

On the south wall of the prakara of the ruined temple of Ranganayaka.

Sadasiva, 1557 A.D.

The inscription is dated Saka 1479, Pingala, Pushya su. 8, Sunday, corresponding to 1557 A.D., December 29. The week day, however, was Wednesday.

It records a grant of land at Pedakomerla in Ghandikota-sima in Udayagiri-rajya for conducting the various festivals such as the floating festival, the swing festival etc., and for offerings to god Raghunayaka of Ghandikota by Mahamandalesvara China Avubhalesvaradeva-maharaju, son of Avubhalesvaradeva-maharaju and grandson of Avubhalrajayyadeva-maharaju of Nandyala.

Ainavolu, Guntur Taluk, Guntur District.

On a stone set up before the Venugopalasamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1558 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1480 (current), Pingala, Pushya ba. 10, Thursday corresponding to 1558 A.D., January 13, f.d.t. ’23.

It registers the gift of the dommaripannu collected in the village Ayanavolu to god Gopinatha of that village by the dommaris Chimku-reddi Narasa-nendu and Komara Virayya for the merit of their twenty-four families when Siddhiraju Timmarajayya was administering Kondaviti-sima.
