TELUGU INSCRIPTIONS OF THE VIJAYANAGARA DYNASTY

No. 251.

(A. R. No. 15 of 1904.)

Hampi, Hospet Taluk, Bellary District.

On the north wall of the mandapa in front of the

deserted shrine to the west of the Vitthalasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1561 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1483, Raudri (current), Phalguna, the other details being lost.

It registers an agreement (kaulu) granted by Kurucheti Srirangaraju, son of Obulraju of the solar race and Kasyapa-gotra to a person (name lost) for his having level-led and brought under cultivation a specified piece of land stipulating an annual payment of one ghatti varaha by him into the treasury of god Vitthalesvara and a fourth share of the produce to the donor. The details pertaining to the rest of the produce are lost. Refers to a gift of garden land made to (the shrine of) Tirumangai-Alvar on the occasion of Prathama-ekadasi.

Miduturu, Nandikotkur Taluk, Kurnool District..

On the front wall of the prakara of the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1561 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1483, Durmati, Jyestha ba. 10, corresponding to 1561 A.D., June 7 (Saturday).

It registers the grant of some land in the village Mirutur to god Chennakesvara of the place for the day-offerings on the occasion of Utthana-dvadasi, by Dalavayi Bhadri-nayaka for the merit of his father Chitttela Bommi-nayaka, from out of the sarvamanya land obtained by him from Anantaraju-Narasaraju.

Miduturu, Nandikotkuru Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the front wall of the prakara of the Chennakesva temple.

Sadasiva, 1561 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1483, Durmati, Jyeshtha ba 10, corresponding to 1561 A.D., June 7 (Saturday).

It registers a grant of land in the village Miruturu in Kamnadu-sima to Chenna Mallikarjuna of Srigiri for the maintenance of a feeding house for pilgrims during Sivaratri, by Daluvayi Bhadri-nayaka, son of Chittela Bommi-nayaka on the occasion of Uthanadvadasi for the merit of his father.

It is stated that the gift land formed part of a bigger portion which the donor had received as sarvamanya from Anantaraju Narasaraju. (Compare No. 252 above).

Halaharavi, Adoni Taluk, Bellary District.

On a rock on the way of Nandavaram from Halaharavi.

Sadasiva, 1562 A.D.

This is dated Saka 148[3], Durmati, Magha su. 1, corresponding to 1582 A.D., January 6, (Tuesday).

The record is damaged. It registers the grant of land as svayamkrishi sarvamanya (i.e., to be cultivated by the donee himself) in a village situated in the region of Adavani-durga to Nellur Ramakrishnayya of Kasyapa-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha by Jagarajayya, son of Mahamandalesvara Kondaviti Tirumalarajayya of the solar race. The region of Adavani-durga is said to have been given to the donor as nayankara by Ramaraja Venkatadriraju, the agent of the king.

Vinukonda, Vinukonda Taluk, Guntur District.

On a stone in the verandah of the Sub-Registrar’s Office.

Sadasiva, 1562 A.D.

This fragmentary inscription is dated Saka 1484, Dundubhi, Ashadha su. 11, Thursday corresponding to 1562 A.D., June 13. The weekday, however was Saturday.

It registers a gift of 3 kunchas of land to Amdela Nagumggayyala Virayya and Sanka Virayya-Setti by Dalavayi Obalesu, the karyakarta of Mahamandalesvara Kondrajayyadeva-maharaju for maintaining a flower garden in the temple of Raghunayaka at Vinukonda-sima. Vinukonda-sima is said to have been held by Kondrajayyadeva-maharaju as nayankara from Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Tirumalayyadeva-maharaju.

Rayachoti, Rayachoti Taluk, Cuddapah District..

On the south wall of the central shrine in the Virabhadrasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1563 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1484, Dundubhi, Pushya su. 10, corresponding to 1563 A.D., January 4.

The inscription records that Puchchalapati Ramayya, the mudra officer under Amarinayani Vengalanayani-garu, the karyakarta of Mahamandalesvara Jillela Rangapatirajayyadeva-maharaj had the central shrine and the sukhanasi of the god Viresvara of Rachavidu repaired. It is said that the donor held the parupatya of Ramadurga-sima.

Chinna Ahobalam, Siruvel Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab set up to the right of the entrance to the kanchu-gumbha-gopuram in the Narasimhasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1563 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1479, Dundubhi, Magha ba. 5, Wednesday. The date appears to have been wrongly engraved. The cyclic year Dundhubi corresponded with Saka 1484 and Magha ba. 5 in this year would correspond to 1563 A.D., February 13, which was a Saturday.

The inscription records a sale of 6 maruttus of land by Ramanuja Jiyyar, the mudrakarta of Vam Sathagopa Jiyyar, Vuggarasa, the karyakartta of Mahamandalesara Ramaraju Tirumalarajayyadeva-maharaju and other temple officials to Mahamandalesvara Vobulraju, son of Vobulraju and grandson of Pochiraju Ramaraju for a sum of 600 varahas remitted by him into the temple treasury and registers the grant of this land by Vobulraju for worship and offerings in the temple of Nammalvar and for feeding twelve Srivaishnavas out of the yield from these lands.

On a slab in the Isvara temple.

This is dated Saka 1485, Rudhirodgarin, Ashadha su. 1, lunar eclipse, corresponding to 1563 A.D., July 5, Monday, ’82.

It records gift of lands in the village Kallurupadu in the Pennamagani-Penakacharla-sima in Jagatapigutti-rajya, to god Ramesvara on the hill, by Mahamandalesvara Pedasingarajayyadeva-maharaju, grandson of Kandanavoli Ramaraju and son of Murtiraju.

On a slab near the dhvajastambha of the Chennakesvarasvamin temple.

This is dated Saka 1487, Rudhirodgarin, Ashadha su. 15, Monday. If the Saka year is a mistake for 1485, the details correspond to 1563 A.D., July 5, when there was a lunar eclipse.
The record stops with the mention of the king’s name.

Chinna Ahobalam, Sirvel Taluk, Kurnool District..

On a slab set up to the left of the entrance into the kanchugumbha-gopura of the Narasimhasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1563 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1486 (current), Rudhirodgarin, Sravan ba. 3, Friday, corresponding to 1563 A.D., August 6.

It registers grants of lands in the villages Kalutapalle in Korakola-sima and Padakallu, Gornipadu, Injedu and Bayyapaguduru, yielding a total income of 308 varahas to be utilized for offerings to god Ahobalesvara, by Mahamandalesvara Koneti Obularajayyadeva-maharaju, son of Koneti-Ayyadeva-maharaju and grandson of ramaraju Pedda Kondrajayyadeva-maharaju of Atreya-gotra Apastamda-sutra and Yajus-sakha.

Pedda Ahobalam, Sirvel Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab in the court-yard of the Narasimhasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1563 A.D.

The Saka year and other details of the date are lost. The cyclic year Rudhirodgarin during the king’s reign corresponded with 1563.

It records the construction of a four pillared mandapa and a matham and registers the grant of a piece of land in the village of Chinnakomerala in Ghandikota-sima by Paramukusa van Sathagopa-Jiyyamgaru stipulating that the income derived from this gift land was to be utilized for the offerings on occasions when god Ahobalesvara was seated in the mandapa during the pancha-parvas when he was taken out in procession from the hill down and back again.

Dharmavaram, Dharmavaram Taluk, Anantapur District.

On a slab in front of the Chennakesavasvamin temple.

The record is dated Saka 1485, Rudhirodgarin corresponding to 1563 A.D.

It is badly damaged and fragmentary. No details pertaining to the grant can be made out.

Chinna Ahobilam, Sirvel Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a slab set up to the left of the entrance into the kanchugumbha-gopura of the Narasimhasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1564 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1486 (current), Rudhirodgarin, Magha su. 15, corresponding to 1564, A.D. January 28, (Friday).

It registers the grant of a piece of land in Lingamdina in Ghandikota-sima to the god Ahobalesvara for specified offerings and their distribution during the garden festivals in the month of Chaitra near the tank constructed by him on the way to Bargavam by Paramkusa Van Sathagopajiyya who received this piece of land from Narasaya who is stated to have obtained the village Lingamdina from Nadela Timmaraja.

Imani, Tenali Taluk, Guntur District.

On a stone lying in a field.

Sadasiva, 1564 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1486 . . . . . . Chaitra, ba. 30 corresponding to 1564 A.D., April 11. The corresponding to cyclic year would be Raktakshi.

This damaged and incomplete record registers a gift of land to Koneti Tiruvengalanathayyangaru, son of Tirumalayyangaru, and grandson of Talapaka Koneti Annamayangaru by Mahamandalesvara Siddhiraju Tirumalarajayyadeva Maharaju, son of Timmaraju and grandson of Sidhhiraju Tirumalayya of Harita-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha.

Enamadala, Narasarowpet Taluk, Guntur District.

On a stone set up in front of the Madanagopalasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1565 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1487, Krodhana, Asvayuja su. 1[1], corresponding to 1565 A.D., October 5, (Friday).

It registers a gift of land in the village of Yanamadala in Vinukonda-sima to Jakkula Kondayya of the village by Dalavayi Venkatesa, the agent of Kumara-Venkatarajayya-maharaju for the merit of his overlord. The donor is stated to have obtained Vinikonda-sima from Mahamandalesvara Ramaraja-Tirumalarajayyadeva-maharaju.

Markapur, Markapur Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the east wall of the Lakshmidevi shrine in the Chennakesava temple.

Sadasiva, 1567 A.D.

This is dated in Saka 1489, Prabhava, Kartika su. 14 and the gift is said to have been made on the occasion of a lunar eclipse. Kartika su 14 of that year occurred on October 17 and the tithi ended at ’03 of the day. The lunar eclipse occurred the next day. The date thus corresponds to 1567 A.D., October 17, (Friday).

It records a gift of half a gocharma of dry land in the gift village Marella in Addankisima, a marttu of wet land under the tank at Marakapuram, and specified quantities of the offerings in the temple as also the gifts (sambhavana) made by the elders on the occasions of festivals for the purpose of reading the puranm in the presence of the god to Lakshmanayya of Harita-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha, son of Girayya and grandson of Parankusam Rangayya, by Mahamandalesvara Venkatayyadeva-maharaja, of Atreya-gotra, Apastamba-sutra and Yajus-sakha, son of Tirumalayyadeva maharaju and grandson of Araviti Ramaraju Srirangarajayyadeva-maharaju.

Chavali, Tenali Taluk, Guntur District.

On the southern gate of the Valesvara temple.

Sadasiva, 1568 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1489, also expressed by the chronogram nava-ashta-varddhi-sasabhrit, Prabhava, Magha su. 11 corresponding to 1568 January 10.

This record commences with a Sanskrit verse describing god valesvara of Chavali consecrated by Ramabhadra and registers a gift of the village Tomtapalli in Kondavidu-sima by Mahamandalesvara Komara Venkatayyadeva Maharaju on the orders of Yaram Timmarajaya for worship and offerings to the god. Kondavidu-sima is said to have been given a nayankara to the donor by Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Tirumalarajayyadeva Maharaju. Also states that this was a renewal of an original grant of this village by Purushottama Gajapati and mentions in addition, the gift of Boddaluru by Bhujabalaraya and some land by Siddhiraju Timmarajayya to the same temple.

Gundala, Dhone Taluk, Kurnool District.

Sadasiva, 1569 A.D.

The epigraph is dated Saka 1491, Sukla, Chaitra su. 10 corresponding to 1569 A.D., March 27.

It records a grant of land in Taduru by Venkatanayanigaru to Bhogaya, entrusting him with the construction of the prakara, mantapa, gardens, tanks etc., of the temple of Chennakesava at Gundala in Dhoni-sima.

Markapur, Markapur Taluk, Kurnool District.

On a pillar of the garuda-mandapa in the Chennkesavasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, 1569 A.D.

This is dated Saka 1491, Sukla, Ashadha su. 12 corresponding to 1569 A.D., June 25.

The record is partly built in. It registers a gift of the income out of the akulamantrayam to the god by Chennapa-nayaka, son of Komara Timma-nayaka and grandson of Veligoti Peda Timma-nayaka of Recherla-gotra. The donor is said to have obtained Kochcherlakota-sima as nayankara from Mahamandalesvara Ramaraju Tirumalarajaya.

Pottapi, Rajampet Taluk, Cuddapah District..

At the entrance of the Mulasthanesvara temple.

Sadasiva, (date lost)

The inscription which is incomplete, records a dasavanda grant of land to Lingareddi and others (names lost), and also to Pandarangi Anantayya and Papayya, the karanams, by Varadayya Devachoda-maharaju, son of Mahamandalesvara Matla Pucharajayya Devachoda-maharaju for their having constructed the Antaraganga canal in Pottapi in Pottapi-nadu of Sidhavatam-sima in the name of Konamamgaru, the donor’s mother. The donor is said to have obtained Sidhavatam-sima, a sub-division of Udayagiri-durga, as amara-nayankara from Mahamandalesvara Rama-raju Tirumalarajayyadeva-maharaju.

Chinna Ahobalam, Sirvel Taluk, Kurnool District.

On the west wall of the Narasimhasvamin shrine in the Narasimhasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, (date lost)

This fragmentary inscription registers the grant of 300 Chakra-gadyas into the temple treasury of god Ahobalesvara for the village Chiluru in Podile-sime as a perpetual endowment (poliyuttu) for offerings and services to the god when he halted in the 16-pillared mandapa built in the temple garden on specified occasions. The name of the donor who held Podile-sime as his nayankara and the details of the date are lost.

Tadikonda, Guntur Taluk, Guntur District.

On a mutilated stone set up opposite to the choultry in the village.

Sadasiva, (date lost).

This is very much damaged. It mentions Gutti Yara-Tirumalarajayya and Timmineningaru. It seems to refer to the rates of annual levy on agricultural lands exempting the artisans (battulu) from payment of these levies.

Halaharivi, Aluru Taluk, Bellary District.

On a slab set up in the courtyard of the Anjaneyasvamin temple.

Sadasiva, (no date).

States that Aliya-Ramappaya, having made a representation to the king and obtained his consent, granted the village Aligera to the temple of Chennakesava for a feeding house for the itinerant brahmanas and sudras who resorted to the military road.

Halebidu, Alur Taluk, Bellary District.

On a beam over the main entrance into the temple of Ahobalasvamin.

It registers the grant of the village Tummalabidu in Hemte-sima, which was under the administration of Ramaraju Koneti Timmaraju, to the god Avubhala-Janardana at Huliyabidu, by the king.

It registers a royal grant of the village Aligere to the god Chennakesvara at Halahari for conducting a feeding house for the brahmanas the aradesis and paradesis using the military road.
