Yogimallavaram, Puttur Taluk, Chittoor District

On the east wall of the Kalyana mandapa in front of the Parasaresvara

 temple. [Rajaraja]

This inscription belongs to the reign of Rajaraja III (Vide No. 299 above and No. 304 below).

This records the setting up of the image of Srikaranappillaiyar by the temple accountant Perumulaiyurudaiyan Tiruchchirrambalamudaiyan Singa-ppillai alias Vagisa-pperumal.

This records the setting up of a pillar.

Tirugokarnam, near Pudukkottai, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the south wall of the rock-cut central shrine in the Gokarnesvara temple.

This is a fragmentary record in Pallava-Grantha characters of 7th – 8th century A.D. and reads ‘Sthapanacharyo-bhagatthacharyah’

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the north face of the north pillar in the rock-cut shrine in the Melaikoyil temple.

This inscription engraved in characters of about the 11th century records the gift of 10 kalanju of gold by a private individual for burning a perpetual lamp and for feeding five Brahmanas during the seven days of Panguni-Uttiram to the deity Tirumulattanattu Perumanadigal.

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the west face of the south pillar in the rock-cut shrine in the Melaikoyil temple.

This damaged Chola inscription records the gift of 5 kalanju of gold by Sattam Pidari for feeding the Panmahesvaras of the temple of Tirumerrali-madeva in Tirunilakkunram in Kunriyur-nadu.

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the east wall of the rock-cut shrine in the Melaikoyil temple.

This inscription records the gift of 7 kalanju of gold by Madirantaka (Madhurantaka) Irukkuvelar evidently a member of the family of Kodumbalur for offering one ulakku of ghee to the temple.

On the east wall of the rock-cut shrine in the Melaikoyil temple. varman. Year 12.

This inscription records the gift of 10 tulaippon by Pandiyadiyarasi alias Pattam-Padari for feeding 20 Brahmanas daily during the seven days of Panguni-Uttiram.

On a rock to the south of the Melaikoyil.

(A. R. No. 356 of 1904).

Kudumiyamalai, Kulattur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the south wall of the Akhilandesvari shrine, in the Sikhanathasvamin temple.

This inscription in Sanskrit verse engraved in Grantha characters of about the 12th – 13th centuries A.D., records the building of a vimana for the shrine for goddess Parvati by Sundaresa.

Narttamalai, Pudukkottai Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On a rock north of the Arumaikkulam pond.

This inscription is in archaic characters of about the 9th century A.D.

It records the construction of a sluice for animada-eri by Tamiladiyaraiyan Mallan Vidaman. Sona Naraiyan, the tachchan (mason) who did the work was granted some land.

On the rock south of the rock-cut Jaina temple.

This inscription is engraved in archaic characters of the about the 8th – 9th century A. D. The purport is not clear.

This inscription engraved in characters of about the 9th century seems to record the renovation of a certain structure. Other details are lost.

This records the death of Munichore of, Vempalli son of Gandachabuli, in a fight. The epigraph is engraved in archaic characters of the 7th century A. D.

Tiruvaur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore District

On the west wall of the first prakara in the Tyagarajasvamin temple. Year 2.

This inscription does not give the name of the king but mentions the 9th day of the second year. On palaeographical considerations this may be assigned to the 12th century.

It records a agrant of land as kani and jivitam to Pirana-upakari-Saraiku . . . . . alias Solendrasinga …. . . . . . . .[Virati]yagataraiyan by the deity at Tiruvarur made at the instance of Solatunga-kkadigamarayan, (Ghatika-maharaja).

No. 593.

(A. R. No. 548 of 1904).

Tiruvaur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore District

On the west wall of the first prakara in the Tyagarajasvamin temple. Year 13.

This inscription does not give the name of the king. It is dated in the 202nd day of the 13th year. Palaeographically it may be assigned to the 12th century A.D.

It records a grant of land in Vayarrur, a brahmadeya to one Pungoyilnambi who composed the Viranukka-vijayam in honour of Virasola-anukkar patronized as our sons (nammakkal) by the god Tiruvarurudaiyar Vidividangadevar, when he was witnessing a dance by Pungoyil Nayaka-ttalaikkoli at Devasriyan. The grant is stated to have been made by the deity at the instance of Tyagavinoda-kkadigaimarayan who acted as the kelvi. Muttirattan figures as the signatory.

Tiruvaur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore District.

On the north wall of the first prakara in the Tyagarajasvamin temple.

This inscription engraved in characters of about the 12th century defines the social status, rights, and duties of Rathakaras or Kammalar based on the scriptures, agamas and puranas which were examined in detail by the Brahmana residents of Pandikulantakachaturvedimangalam.

(A. R. No. 569-A of 1904).

Tiruvaur, Nagapattinam Taluk, Tanjore District.

On the north wall of the Achalesvara shrine in the south-east corner of the second prakara in the Tyagarajasvamin temple.

The beginning of this inscription is lost. On palaeographical considerations this is assignable to 11 – 12th centuries A.D.

It records the sale of land, that was lying fallow, to the temple for reclamation and utilization of the produce for the flower-garlands and other services to godTiruvarurudaiyar, by the sabha of Vayarrur, for a consideration of 60 kasu.

On the west wall of the third prakara in the Tyagarajasvamin temple.

(A. R. No. 587 of 1904).

Srinivasanallur, Musiri Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the walls of the Ganesa shrine, in the Ramanatha temple.

On palaeographical grounds this inscription may be assigned to the 10th century.

It seems to record a sale of land by the mulaparadai of a village apparently the find spot, to Perumanadigal of Srinarayanapuram, receiving 16 ½ kalanju weighted by kudinaikkal, It mentions Velur-kkurram and a person Vetkovan Kesanakkan.

No. 634.

(A. R. No. 588 of 1904).

Srinivasanallur, Musiri Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On the east wall of the Kuranganatha temple.

On palaeographical grounds this may be assigned to the 10 – 11th century.

It seems to record a grant of land, purchased for 55 kalanju. It mentions Nakkanarayani-Tiruvi……. The wife of Omachcha[Nara]na Kinan and Tiyambakan Manan, the madhyasthan of the paradai. Mahendra[mangalam], a brahmadeyam mentioned in this record is obviously an ancient name of Srinivasanallur.

Srinivasanallur, Musiri Taluk, Tiruchirappalli District.

On a stone built into the floor of the Visvanathasvamin temple. Year 29.

This inscription is engraved in characters of about the 12th century. Only the title Tribhuvanachakravartigal of the king is seen and the other details are lost in the right end portion.

This seems to record the gift of an ornament and a gomukha (an outlet for water attached to a pedestal in the form of a cow’s mouth) by Nambippillai.

Tiruvandavar, Kanchipuram Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the south wall of the mandapa inf ront of the central shrine of the Tiruvandanathesvara temple.

This fragmentary record may be assigned to the 11 – 12th century, on grounds of palaeography.

It mentions Vanavan-nallur apparently separated from Vadasalaippakkam and Sirranaikkavur in Kalatturkottam in Jayangonda-Sola-mandalam.

No. 667.

(A. R. No. 613-B of 1904).

Tiruvandavar, Kanchipuram Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the south wall of the mandapa in front of the central shrine of the Tiruvandanathesvara temple.

On palaeographical grounds this fragmentary record may be assigned to the 11th – 12th centuries.

It refers to the tanattar of the temple and mentions a sivabrahmana, Kasyapan Aludaiyan Kayappattu Tiruvenkada-bhattan.

No. 670.

Tiruvandavar, Kanchipuram Taluk, Chingleput District. On the same slab.

This inscription in modern characters seems to record some gift made for the merit of Kodandaramayan, the agent of ……. Kkolla Sayabu (saheb) in the year Vikari, Adi 17.

No. 672.

(A. R. No. 617 of 1904).

Irugunrappalli, Chingleput Taluk, Chingleput District. On a slab lying in a garden.

This inscription in modern characters seems to record that Velikkottu Singama-Nayakkarayyan arranged through Parupatyam Simmana-Ravuttar for the settlement of people of different castes in the madavilagam. It was also stipulated that they should, besides contributing ¼ panam to god Raanathasvamin reconsecrated in Dunmati, Tai, 6, conduct the festivals and arrange for other connected services.

No. 674.

(A. R. No. 618-A of 1904).

Vedanarayanapuram, Chingleput Taluk, Chingleput District. On the slopes of the hill.

This inscription mentions Dalavay Nayakar and the king’s mudramanusha whose name is damaged.

It seems to record a grant of land and mentions the villages Manappakkam, Arupadukuppam, Udayambakkam and Palanai [Pun][di*].

No. 687.

(A. R. No. 631 of 1904).

Ramagiri, Tiruvallur Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the south wall of the central shrine in the Valisvara temple.

This inscription, engraved in characters of the 12th century is damaged at the beginning and hence the king’s name and the regnal year are lost.

It records the gift of 64 cows, by Ninraiyur-nattan of Naduvin-malai, for burning two perpetual lamps in the temple. The measure called tirukkarikaraiyudaiyan is also mentioned.

No. 693.

(A. R. No. 637 of 1904).

Ramagiri, Tiruvallur Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the north wall of the central shrine in the Valisvara temple. S. 1358 : 1436 A.D.

The details of date i.e., Saka 1338, Nala, Arpasi, 25 are irregular. If the Saka year quoted is a mistake for S. 1358, the date would correspond to 1436 A.D.

This inscription records the gift of two door-ways in the shrine of Tiruvalisvaramudaiya nayanar and the setting up of an image of Tiruppalli-nachchiyar for the god, by Sakkarasar, son of Ayyaluppi Kadaiyar Vide No. 725 below.

No. 714.

(A. R. No. 657 of 1904).

Ramagiri, Tiruvallur Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the east wall of the Bhairava shrine in the Valisvara temple.  Year 2.

This inscription records an order of Madhurantaka Pottappi Chola regarding the remission of portion of the tax realized in kind from the different classes of land viz., tiruvidaiyattam, pallichandam, agaraparru, vanniyapparru, jivitapparru and padaiparru from the month of Aippasi in the 2nd year.

No. 717.

(A. R. No. 660 of 1904).

Ramagiri, Tiruvallur Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the back of the stone bull through the mouth of which water flows into the tank in the Valisvara temple.
This inscription in characters of about the 9 – 10th century A.D., records the setting up of the bull by Peruntachchan, a carpenter of Kuvam, and the son of Chamundi.

No. 719.

(A. R. No. 662 of 1904).

Tirumullaivayal, Saidapet Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the south wall of the central shrine in the Masilamanisvara temple. Year 35.

Madhurantaka Pottappichchola figuring in this inscription is the well-known feudatory of Raajaraja III and the year 35 cited may perhaps be taken as an year of Rajaraja’s reign, i.e., 1251 – 52 A.D.
This inscription registers the order of Madhurantaka Pottappichcholan granting the village Tirumullaivayal free from the payment of taxes such as ponvari, nattuvari, kanikkai, ullur-pura-kkalanai, etc., for conducting a festival and a service called after Vijaya Gandagopalan and for puja and other food-offerings to the deity Tirumullaivayal-udaiya Nayanar in Kanapperur-nadu, in Pulal-kottam, in Jayangondasola-mandalam.

No. 729.

(A. R. No. 672 of 1904).

Tirumullaivayal, Saidapet Taluk, Chingleput District.

On the north wall of the central shrine in the Masilamanisvara temple. Year 4.

This inscription records the order of Madhurantaka Pottappichchola to the effect that taxes like ponvari, etc., should be levied only on 10 veli of land and that the levies kurrappatti and sikariyapperu, were remitted, for services in the temple of Tirumullaivayal-udaiya-nayanar.
Gandagopala figuring as the signatory of the grant is obviously the same as Madhurantaka-Pottappichchola. (cf., No. 719 above.)

No. 762.

(A. R. No. 705 of 1904).

Nedungunam, Wandiwash Taluk, North Arcot District.

On the main gopura of the Ramachandraperumal temple, right of the entrance. 1614 A.D.

This record is dated in Rakshasa leading to Ananda, (apparently a mistake for Ananda leading to Rakshasa), Vaikasi 19. The cyclic year may be equated to 1614 A.D., on account of the identity of Raghunatha-nayakkar mentioned in the inscription with the homonymous ruler of Tanjavur.

This inscription records the gift of 3 kani of land in Torrampattu village by Sonadri Ayyan, the agent of Raghunathanayakkarayyan as [per-manyam] to Muttu, daughter of Attagiri, one of the devaradiyar belonging to the Vaduga group on the occasion of conferring to the title of Vijayaraghava-manikkam on her, during the festival in the month of Vaikasi, in the Periyannan-mandapa of the temple.

No. 763.

(A. R. No. 706 of 1904).

Nedungunam, Wandiwash Taluk, North Arcot District.

On the main gopura of the Ramachandra-perumal temple. 1616 A.D.

This inscription is dated in Rakshasa, Panguni 4, which will correspond to 1616 A.D., February-March. This records the gift of 6 panam per month and 150 kuli of land to Margasahaya Panditar, a physician, by Sonadri Ayyan, the agent of Raghunatha Nayakar, Tirumalai-Attanar, the Srikaryam officer of the Ramachandra perumal temple and the Sribhandarattar.

No. 764.

(A. R. No. 707 of 1904).

Nedungunam, Wandiwash Taluk, North Arcot District.

In the main gopura of the Ramachandra-perumal temple left of the entrance. 1611 A.D.

This inscription is dated Virodhikrit, Panguni 11. It records gift of land by Sonadri Ayyan, the agent of Ariyappa Aiyyan, Tirumalai Ayyangar, the Srikaryam officer of the temple and the officers of the temple treasury as per-manyam to Ramachandra-manikkam (cf. No. 762 above).

(A. R. No. 709 of 1904).

Nedungunam, Wandiwash Taluk, North Arcot District.

On the east wall of the mandapa in front of the central shrine,

right of the entrance in the Dirghachalesvara temple. 1642 A.D.

This inscription is dated in Vishu, Tai 19. On account of the mention of Vijayaraghava-nayakkar who commenced to rule from 1633 A.D., the cyclic year Vishu, a mistake for Vrisha will correspond to 1641 – 42 A.D., It records the gift of two villages Kilavan Pundi and Mosupadi, made free of the levies poruppu and menkaval, by Singama-nayakkar, the agent of Vijayaraghava-nayakkar for the conduct of puja regularly by the settis in the temple of Isandar Isvarar.
