SAUNDATTI, PARASAGAD TALUK, BELGAUM DISTRICT
On a slab set up in the Basti-gudi Taila II A.D. 980
The record is dated Saka 902, Vikrama,
Paushya, su. 10, Thursday, Uttarayana-Sankranti. The
Sankranti occurred on
Thursday, December 23, A.D. 980.
The tithi was, however, su. 14 on that day and not su.
10 as stated in the record.
The inscription registers the grant of 150
mattars of land by the Ratta chief Santivarmarasa to the
Jaina monastery (basadi) caused to be constructed by him
at Sugandhavarti (i.e., modern Saundatti). The
genealogy of this chief is given. The gift was
entrusted to Bahubali-bhattaraka. It also records
another gift of 150 mattars of land by the chiefâs
mother Nijiyabharasi to the same monastery.

This is dated Saka 936, Ananda, Phalguna,
Amavasya, Sunday, Samkranti, corresponding to A.D.1015,
February 20, Sunday, f.d.t. 56. The Mina samkranti
occurred on the following day.
The record gives a genealogical account of
the Chalukya dynasty in the beginning commencing from
Ranaraga, son of Jayasimha I, and ending with
vasudhaikamalla Ayyanadeva.
It registers a gift of 60 mattars of land,
three gardens, one oil-mill and three shops, by
Mahasamanta Devanarasa described as the brother of the
king, to god Nagaresvara. Moradiya Chamundayya, the
Senabova, wrote the record. It mentions
chandrasekharacharya of Nagaresvara temple and also
certain other individuals.

It seems to record certain gifts made by
several Gavundas of Sidiyanuru, when Mahamandalesvara
Kali Katimayyarasa was governing Banavasi 12,000 and his
subordinate va[vana]rasa was administering
Sattalige-70.

10 Thursday, Uttarayana-samkranti corresponding
regularly to December 24, A.D. 1019.
It
records that while the king was ruling from Etagiri, and
his son Mahasamanta Dasarasa was governing the eighteen
agraharas including Ruvige, situated in Tarddavadi-nadu,
Mahasamanta Dhanasangrahayyarasa of the Selara family
made a gift of land to God Nagaresvara of Aneya-Ruvige,
for worship and offerings as also for the maintenance of
the ascetics of the place. The gift was entrusted to
Balachandrapandita.
The king is stated to have been ruling from his capital
(nelevidu) Etagiri.

The record is dated Saka 9[50], Pra[bhava], vaisakha su,
[8], Monday, corresponding to A.D. 1027, April 16, the
weekday, however, being Sunday and not Monday. The Saka
year was current.
It
registers a grant of land to the temple built by
Bachagaunda, by Mahasamanta Dandanatha Rebbarasa. The
gift land was situated in his manya at Gollageri.

records a gift, by the queen Suggaladevi of certain
lands to Bramarasipandita of the Pasupata school, for
worship and offering to god Marasinghevara of Devapura
and also for maintaining ascetics and students.

The badly damaged record is dated Saka 956, Bhava,
Samkranti, Sunday. In the given year, corresponding to
A.D. 1034-35 no samkranti occurred on a Sunday. The
date cannot as such be verified.
It
records that when Mahamatya [Perggade Mqadimayya] was
administrating Bamavasi 12,000 (including Santalige
1000) and Mahamndalesvara Mayurvarmma was governing the
Panumgal-500, gifts of land and garden, etc., were made
to the temple of Banasamkaradeva by certain individuals,
whose names are not clear. It gives the genealogical
account of a certain Barma and seems to describe the
glory of vamadeva who was the disciple of Devarasi Jiyya
and sthandadhipa of Svayambhu temple. This Vamadeva was
possibly the donee.

The record is badly damaged, the ends of all the lines
being mutilated. There are two dates, but both are
incomplete (1) . . . . pushya, Amavasya, eclipse. (2).
. . . . isvara, Samkranti. The latter date, falling in
the reign period of the king corresponds to A.D.
1037-38.
The record contains the eulogy of a subordinate chief
(name lost). It mentions Revana_bhatta and seems to
record a gift of land on the latter date.

registers gift of land, house-site, oil-mill and garden
to God Mulasthana-Mahadeva at Benakanakavittage situated
near Sindige-12 which was a Kampana, by Perggade Melayya,
in the presence of Manneya Nayimarasa and Mahasamanta
Mukarasa. The latter, who is stayed
Banavasipuravaresvara, is stated to have been
administering the melalke of Pagarite-nadu.

The record gives the genealogical account of the donor.

The inscription records a gift of toll â income to god
Somesvara of Kalkere, for Offerings and burning oil-
lamp, by the several officers of Kupputurathane and the
Tilivalliya things at the command of Mahamatya
Somanathayya, the perggade of Vaddaravula Mahamatya
Vavanayya, the perggade of perjjumka and
Mabamandalesvara Kirtivarmmadeva.

The inscription records a gift of land to god Jogesvara
(?) by Mahasamanta ladrakesiyarasa who was governing
over Purigere-300 division as Rashtrakutaka, And others.
It mentions Tantrapala Chavundamayya who was also
perhaps a donor. The gift was made over to
Lokabharana-pandita.
The second part of the record registers a gift of land
to the same god at Kuyillabala, by certain gaundas whose
names are lost Lokabharana-pandita was The recipient of
this gift. This is dated in the month of Sravana, su,
11, Monday, Other details not being given. The date
cannot be verified.

The first 17 lines of the record are published in
Epigraphia Indica, Vol. XVI, pp. 353ff. It refers to
Mahamandalesvara Kirtivarmadeva governing Banavasi
12,000.
The subsequent portion, which is badly damaged, seems to
record a gift to Kalla-degula.

Bhuvanaikamalla (Somesvara II) ---A.D. 1069
This badly damaged record is dated Saka 991, Kilaka,
Amavasya, Sunday, Dakshinayana [Samkranti]. This date is
irregular. The cyclic year corresponding to The given
Saka year was Saumya and not Kilaka. The intended date
seems to be A.D. 1069, June 21 when the tithi was
amavasya and the week-day was Sunday. The Samkranthi,
however, occurred three days later.
The inscription records the gift of certain money
incomes made by Madhavayya Nayaka with the permission of
the king for the benefit of the temple of Nakharesvara
At Ruvige when Payyarasa was governing Tardavadi
division.
The inscription also refers to another gift of oil made
by the Fifty Telliga Tenants for a lamp in the temple of
Kedaresvara of the place (i.e., Ruvige) in the Year Saka
967, Partthiva, Pushya su. 5, Sunday
Uttarayana-Samkranti. This date Corresponds to A.D.
1045, December 15, f.d.t.64. There was no Samkranti On
this date. It appears that this gift was revived as in
the case of No.45 below.

records a gift of income from certain taxes for worship,
offerings and Burning perpetual lamp before God
Nagaresvaradeva by Perggade Kannapayya, senabova
Malapayya-nayaka and the Karana when Mahamamdalesvara
Payiyarasa Was governing Tardavadi-1000 division.
It
contains the renewal of the gift of oil to God
Kedaradeva by Telliga Gom- Kayya and others made in the
year Saka 967, Parthiva, Pushya, su. 7, Sunday, Uttara-
Yana-samkranti. The details of this date are irregular.
The tithi corresponded to A.D. 1045, December 18,
Wednesday and the samkranti occurred on December 23. See
No.44 above.

This record is dated Saka 994, Paushya, su. 11, Monday,
Uttarayana-Samkranti Corresponding regularly to A.D.
1072, December 24.
The inscription records the revival of the endowment of
the village Gudigere, Formerly made by Kumkumamahadevi,
the younger sister of the Chalukya King Vijayaditya, to
Anesejjeya-basadi which was caused to be constructed by
her a Puligere. The gift is stated to have been made by
queen Kamchalamahadevi who Was governing from the
headquarters at Mulugunda and others in the presence of
the King, with the consent of Bhaskara-bhattopadhyaya on
the occasion of his victorious return from the northern
expedition. It is also stated that Mahapradhana Danda-
Nayaka Rudrabhattopadhyaya was administering Gudigere
and Dandanayaka Isvara- Bhatta was in charge of all the
departments. The donee was Nandi-panditadeva.

Manala family, Who was the Rashtrantaka of Purigere â300
division,visited Permadi Basadi at Purigere, made it
into a pure at the request of Tribhuvanachamdrapandita,
disciple of Gandavimukta â Bhattaraka of mala-samgha and
balatkara-gana and remitted certain tax âincome to the
same. Mahamandalesvara Lakshamarasa was then governing
the divisions of Purigereâ300 and Belvola â300.

The record is dated Saka 998, Rakshase, Pushya, Amavaya,
Sunday, Hasta nakshatra, Uttarayana â samkranti. The
details of this date are irregular. The Saka year 998
corresponded to the Cyclic year Anala when the said
Sainkranti occurred on Saturday, the tithi being ba. 11
of the month Pushya and the nakshatra Visakha. In the
cyclic year Rakshasa the samkranti occurred on Friday
the tithi being su. 15 and the nakahatra Punarvasu. The
intended date might be 1076 A.D. December 24, Saturday.
The inscription registers the gift of the village
Pullavala situated to the south of the river Varada in
Basavura â140, a sub â division of Banavasi â12, 000,
to God Svaymbhu Somesvara of Kalkerge, for worship and
offerings to the deity and for feeding the ascetics,
etc, by Bhuvanaikamalla- Vira âNolamba who was governing

was made, in conjunction with his wife Malaladevi, at
the request of Perggade Divakara and was entrusted to
Devasinga Jiya. The king was at that time camping at
Bankapura. The record contains an eulogy of the donor
and his wife.
