Broken hero-stone in the temple of Virabhadra

This inscription commemorates the death of Sova-gavuda, who died in cattle raid at Bedage (modern Byadgi). The characters are of about the 12th century A.D.

Hero-stone set up near the eastern entrance into the Kalamesvara temple

This inscription, dated in Chaitra ba. Ashtami, Bhaskaravara (Sunday), records the death of Machiga, son of a certain Keta.  The characters belong to about the 12th century A.D.

Itgi, Ranebennur Taluk, Dharwar District

Door-frame at the first entrance into the Virpakshalinga temple

This undated record states that when Garuda-pandyadeva was governing Nurmubada, his subordinate Heggade Jannayya and Satagaumda and Kalagaunda of Ittage made a grant of land for the worship and offerings to god Virupakshadeva (of Ittage).  The record is engraved in characters of the 12th century A.D.

Kadarmandalgi, Ranebennur Taluk, Dharwar District

Hero-stone set up near the Garuda pillar in front of the Hanuman temple

This badly damaged record mentions Kadimridi (the present Kadarmanadalgi) and seems to record a grant of land.  The other details are not clear.  It is engraved in characters of abut the 12th century A.D.

Makanur, Ranebenuur Taluk, Dharwar District

Hero-stone set up near the Ramesvara temple

This inscription records the death of Dasiga in fight with Vijaya-Pandya and states that Bhujabala-pandya rewarded Dasiga and the valiant Erakama.  Italso records a grant of land in makanur, made by Chamagaumda to both the heroes.

This damaged inscription commemorating the death of Chikkagavunda, is dated Parabhava, Kartika ba. Panchami, Monday.  The Saka year 11 . . is party preserved.

Haveri, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

Hero-stone in the temple of Siddhesvara

This short inscription written in characters of about the 12-13th century A.D. states that Masaya, son of Kshemaya-Nayaka died in a fight at Banavase on Tuesday, su. 13, in the month of Bhadrapada of the cylcic year Virodhi.

Broken hero-stone lying near the temple of Dollesvara

This damaged record registers a grant of land made to Birabova by Tribhuvana-simgi and the Gaudas of Kolu.  The characters are of about the 12-13th century A.D.

Pillar in the southern gopura of theViranarayanasvami temple

This inscription of about the 12-13th century A.D., states that Mahapradhana Mahadeva,  a follower of the Jaina faith, renovated the Jina-bhavana.  He is called the pradhana of Ekkala-bhupala of the town of Uddhare and Ekkaladevana rajyabhayudaya-karana-karana (the cause of the rise of Ekkaladeva’s kingdom).  The genealogy of Mahadeva is given.

Hattimattur, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

Brokenstone built into the wall of the backyard of the house of Somanauda Dyavanagaudar

This inscription is characters of about the 12-13th century A.D. seems to record a grant ofland made by the potter Madhava, in the presence of the Urodeya and Mahajanas of the agrahara town Hattiyamattavur.

The record being fragmentary, its purport is not clear, A certain [Mallikarjuna] and Kotisvara are mentioned.  The characters belong to the 12-13th century A.D.

Makanur, Rannebennur Taluk, Dharwar District

Stone in the compound of the Hanuman temple

This inscription records the death by samadhi of Boppa-gauda of Makanur, the disciple of Nandi-Bhattaraka of Mulasamgha and Surastha-gana.  The inscription is dated in the cyclic year Khara, Kartikasu. Friday.  The characters belong to about the 12-13th century A.D.

Haralhalli, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

Hero-stone on the river bank

A.D. 1206

This record dated in Saka 11[29] (current), Kshaya, kartika, Purnima, Monday, states that a hero named kaleya died in a fight near Anevari, with a certain Pandya, while Rajaguru alyanasaktideva was sending his brother Dhruvesvaradeva to Sriparvata.  It is also stated that some land was granted in recognition of his valour.

The tithi cited corresponds to A.D. 1206, October 18, Wednesday (not Monday as stated in the record)

Bijapur, Bijapur Taluk, Bijapur District

Sixth pillar in Ark-Killah

This inscription is dated in Saka 1162, Sarvari, Pushya Amavasya, Sunday corresponding to A.D. 1241, January 13, Sunday.

It records a grant of land and certain taxes by Sarvadhikari Bhagubayi to the worship and offerings of god Narasimhadeva of Vijayapura.

Holi-Anaveri, Ranebennur Taluk, Dharwar District

Pillar in the Samgamesvara temple

A.D. 1246

This inscription dated in Saka 1168, Parabhava, Asvija su. 11, Monday, records agift of money for the offering of flowers to god Visvarupadeva.  The donor was Nagavve the motherof Sateya-Nayaka who bore the biruda Balleyar-Ereya.

The details of the date correspond to A.D. 1246, September 23, which was, however, Sunday, not Monday.

Hero-stone in the temple of Siddhesvara

A.D. 1252

This damaged record is dated in Saka 1174, Paridhavi, Vaisakha ba . . . . (the tithi and week-day are lost), corresponding to A.D. 1252, April-May.

It mentions a Jaitugi.  The characters are Nagari and the language is Marathi.

This inscription is dated in Saka 1183 (Current) Raudri, Sravana ba. 5 Thursday, corresponding to A.D. 1260, July 29, Thursday.

Bijapur, Bijapur Taluk, Bijapur District

Stone (A-18) in the museum

A.D. 1278

This inscription is dated in Saka 1200, Bahudhanya, Vaisakha su. 15, Sunday, corresponding to A.D. 1278, May 8, Sunday.

It states that Sayideva – [Dandanayaka Brahmin of Vasishtha-gotra constructed a temple and installed therein the deities Rechesvara and Varadani-Tripurushesvara and made a grant of land for the worship and offerings to the gods.  Mandalika Mahadeva-Raneya also made a grant of land to the same gods.  The gift land was purchased from Sivarasideva, the acharya of the temple of Gokesvaradeva.

The first half of the record is in Sanskrit verse.  A supplementary record on the second face of the stone registers a grant for the resident priest and also enumerates the qualifications of the person fit to perform worship.

Kadkol, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

Stone in front of the temlple of Hanuman

A.D. 1279

This inscription records the death by the rite of samadhi, of Chandi-gaudi, the wife of Savanta Siriyama-gauda of Kadakola.  She was the lay disciple of Padumasena-Bhattarakha of Mula-samgha.  The date of her death is cited as Saka 1201, Pramathi, Bhadrapada su.  Shashthi, Monday, corresponding to A.D. 1279, August 14, Monday, f.d.t 12.

A record of the grant of land made to a basadi by Hiriya-Boppa-gauda and others is added at the end.

A.D. 1293

This fragmentary record is dated  in Saka 1215, Vijaya, [Marga]sira su 5, Thursday, corresponding to A.D. 1293, November 4. The week-day was Wednesday.  The following Thursday was a day of sunya-tithi

It registers a grant of land by Vitharasa, the officer-in-charge of taxes, and others for worship and offerings to a god (name lost)

This fragmentary stone of about the 13th century A.D.  records the death of a, certain Nayaka (name lost).

Guttal, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

Hero-stone set up on the tank bund

This inscription engraved in characters of about the 13th century A.D., records thedeath of Holeya-Nayaka, who fought with Baicheya and died in the presence of a Mahamandalesvar (name doubtful).  The title Ujeniya-Puravaradhisvara indicates that the chief belonged to the family of the Guttas.

Hero-stone in a lane near the Honda

This record states that the hero-stone was set up by Maleya-Nayaka in memory of a hero, probably the servant of Mahamandalesvara Madarasa.  The characters are of about the 13th century A.D.  Madarasa is stated to be a devotee of Dhavalanatha of Kaladi (B.K. No. 70 of 1932-33)

Hatimatur, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

Hero-stone near the temple of Kodi Basappa

This damaged record states that Saveya-Nayaka, (son of) Chavudadevi set up a hero-stone in memory of a hero called Manaya-Nayaka who died for hismaster Chavumdeya-Nayaka of Mallur.  Mahamandalesvara Madarasa is mentioned.  He is stated to be a devotee of Dhavalanatha of kaladi.

Haveri, Haveri Taluk, Dharwar District

North-west pillar in the navaranga in the Siddhesvara temple

This record belonging to the 13th century A.D. is dated in the cyclic year Sarvadhari, Kartika su. 5, Thursday and states that, at the instance of Sarvadhikari Vikadeva-pandita, Chavundarasa, the mahaianas, Nagaras, Ubhayamarga-Tuluras and other bodies, granted incomes on certain articles, for offerings to god Siddhanathadeva (of Haveri)

Capitals of the pillars in the temple of Siddhesvara

These inscription state that the respective pillars on wich they are engraged were caused to be made by Galatigeya Mallisetti and his three sons Karuva Simgisetti, Mukisetti and Mahadevasetti. The characters belong to about the 13th century A.D.

This record of about the 13th century A.D. states that Madarasa had the foot prints (of a deity) made in the Jina-mandira.
