Amritaghatesvara Temple-On The North Wall Of The Central Shrine

Tribh. Vikram-Choladeva-2nd Year.

This is damaged. It records an agreement by the maha-sabha of Tirukkadavur in Ambar-nadu a division of Viranarayana-valanadu to pay the taxes on a land endowed for the maintenance of a matha called the “Ayirattannurruvan-madan” established by a Vellala of the place by name Tiruvenkadudaiyan Niraninadappaera-raiyan for feeding Siva yogis. The assembly is said to have received for this purpose a lump-sum payment of 40 kasu from the donor.

(A. R. No. 91 of 1906)

South Arcot District, Tirukkoyilur Taluk, Jambai

Jambunatha Temple-On The Same Wall

Tribh. Vikrama Chola-Date Lost.

The inscription is mutilated at the end of the lines. It seems to register some gift (the nature of which is not clear) to the temple of Tantonri-Aludaiyar at Senbai by Solan Periyan a shepherd (manradi) of the place in expiation of his wife’s death at his hands (though unintentionally in a quarrel?). Mention is made of “Disai vilangu Disai-Ayirattainnurruvar” on whose accusation evidently he made this gift.

Jambunatha Temple-On The Same Wall

Tribh. Vikrama-Chola-9th Year (A.D. 1126-7)

The inscription is built in at the beginning of the lines. It seems to record a gift of 32 cows for burning a lamp in the temple of Tantonrisvaram-Udaiyar at sanbai by one Kudaludaiyan Kulattan Sendan of Kadambur on the southern bank of the river in Vanagappadi (alias) Rajendra-valanaduto atone for the death caused by him, of Pichchan Panman Kandan of the same village in a quarrel (?).The relatives of the victim are said to have been consulted (by the donor?) as to the course of action to be taken. Another gift of 32 cows to the temple of tirunagisvaram-Udaiyar is mentioned at the end.

Vikrama-Chola-17th Year (A.D. 1134-35)

This is left incomplete towards the end. The inscription registers the ulvari (entry in Tax-register) for the lands endowment after purchase by one Taraiyudaiyan Vichchadiran Sahayan alias Vingirayan to provide for the requirements of worship and offerings (specified in detail) on all important festival Sundays in the temple of Urbagankondadevar at Iraiyanarayur, on which occasions the image of the goddess Tiruppaliyarai-Aludaiyal was taken in procession round the temple to the recital of Tiruchchalal hymns (of Manikyavachaka).

The land was to be utilized partly as areca nut garden and flower garden and partly as wetland for cultivation to meet the requirements of worship in the temple.
