  • The Finance Ministry has cleared 27 foreign direct investments recommended by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) worth USD 225 million primarily in telecom, infrastructure, and insurance. These proposals are in response to the thrust areas of this year’s budget. The Commerce Ministry also indicated that India and Singapore will review the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to identify areas where the two countries can improve bilateral trade and investments. Currently, investment from Singapore into India is paltry and has not reached the potential it should have.

  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh categorically rejected allegations from his communist allies and the Opposition that India has surrendered its independent foreign policy because of the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal. Describing the US as a “super-power,” he said that the deal creates a “new space” for India and also “greater economic elbow room” for economic development. He insisted that it was in India’s interest to engage with and leverage the relationship with the US for mutual and global benefit. He denied that India was part of any coalition to change the regime in the region. Interestingly, some key anti-India American opinion makers say that the US gave away too much
