• Prime Minister Manmohan Singh categorically rejected allegations from his communist allies and the Opposition that India has surrendered its independent foreign policy because of the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal. Describing the US as a “super-power,” he said that the deal creates a “new space” for India and also “greater economic elbow room” for economic development. He insisted that it was in India’s interest to engage with and leverage the relationship with the US for mutual and global benefit.
