Laloo holds his line

Despite the political isolation of his position accusing the Election Commission of favoritism a year ago, Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav held his line demanding the resignation of the Election Commissioners.

Laloo had reportedly met the Prime Minister who refused to budge from his earlier position of Constitutional propriety and non-politicization of Constitutional institutions. The United Progressive Alliance coalition Government requires the support of Laloo's RJD party for survival. Newspaper editorials are asking Laloo to resign and the PM not to give him to his tantrums. The Communists are also exacting their agenda by questioning the credibility of the Finance Minister since he is proposing to increase Foreign Direct Investment in the retail sector.

The Government has in the meanwhile taken a very serious view of Mr. Saptarishi's allegations and has issued a show cause notice so he can justify the breach of privilege and responsibilities. Mr. Saptarishi claims he acted in "National Interest."

Laloo vs EC

In the meanwhile, The President has sought a full report from the Prime Minister on this issue and has again praised the Election Commission for its excellent contribution to the Indian democracy.

In an unrelated but similar incident, Ms. Mayawathi, the three time Chief Minister has been charged by the Central Bureau of Investigation with embezzlement and possessing assets beyond known sources of income. Ms. Mayawathi is using the caste leverage (similar to Laloo) against the CBI and is demanding that the PM intervene to stop the investigation from going forward.
