PM looks East with confidence

Among the presidential and prime ministerial airplanes lined up at the VIP end of the lush Halim airport in Jakarta, Air India's \91\91Tanjore'' jumbo cut a majestic profile. It seemed a fitting reminder of the protagonist's role India had played at the first Bandung Conference here 50 years ago.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh acknowledged as much when he said, an hour before landing, that this was \91\91a sentimental journey'' commemorating the initiatives Jawaharlal Nehru had taken to bring Asia and Africa together in the wake of India's own Independence.

Strengthening relations with India's neighbours was a theme the Prime Minister stressed during a half-hour chat with the media aboard \91\91Tanjore.'' The success of the recent visit by the Chinese Prime Minister was a milestone on this road. He was looking forward to meeting all the other leaders of the region assembled now in Indonesia. He would be pleased to meet the Nepal King as well, he said.

The Prime Minister fielded questions with the aplomb of a political veteran. Clearly there was a note of self-assurance as he put repeated emphasis on the burgeoning \91\91look east'' policy. \91\91The need for South-South cooperation has never been as strong as now,'' he said.

Nepal King: Meeting with Manmohan cordial: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Nepal's King Gyanendra met formally on Saturday for the first time since the monarch seized power two months ago, with the king describing the talks as "cordial". They met on the sidelines of the Asia-Africa summit in Jakarta, where the King is on his first foreign tour since he took power.

CBI probe into arms deal:
The government has asked the CBI to examine yet another defence deal signed during George Fernandes's tenure. But the former defence minister says it's personal vendetta.

'Arms purchase should not suffer': The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, said on Friday that he hoped the ongoing controversy over corruption in defence deals would not affect the timely purchase of necessary defence equipment.
