Sonia promises parliament
quota for women soon

Reiterating her commitment to seat reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures, National Advisory Council Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said on Tuesday that a decision on the issue would be taken soon.

\93Talks are on with different political parties on the issue of reserving 33 per cent seats for women in Parliament and Vidhan Sabhas and the present deadlock would be resolved soon,\94 she said.

Addressing a function organised here to mark the International Women\92s Day, the Congress President said it was due to the efforts of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi that more than 10 lakh women could participate in the panchayat system. \93This process should be carried forward,\94 Ms Gandhi said.

She also assured that efforts for providing employment and education facilities for women would be taken up on a mission mode and it should be treated as a \93national programme with utmost priority\94. Seeking a comprehensive law for putting an end to discrimination against women and girl child, Ms Gandhi said land titles or pattas in a family should be in the wife\92s name.
