Tsunami toll over 7,000
in Tamil Nadu, Pondy

Three days after the tsunami disaster hit coastal areas of the country, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry are still counting their dead with the toll mounting to a staggering 7,000 today amidst stepped up efforts to prevent any break out of epidemic and speed up rehabilitaion work.

At Nagapattinam, the worst affected district, 4900 bodies were buried -- 2400 in Nagapattinam, 1500 in Velankanni and 1000 in other parts of the district, Thanjavur district secretary of Red Cross Raj Manohar, said.

Red Cross and Health authorities have started inoculation of people in the distruct as a preventive measure.

While Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had yesterday put the toll at 3925, she had also said there could be additions as many more were missing.

A Cuddalore report said over 500 deaths had occured due to the Tsunami, while at Kalpakkam, the toll was put at 100. At Pondicherry, the toll was put at 500, including 400 at Karaikal. Kanyakumari accounted for 800 deaths and in Chennai, it was put at around 200.

Keeping out Car Nicobar, where the number is expected to be \93quite high\94, the preliminary toll in other affected areas is close to more than 4,000, he said.

Good Samaritan India helps neighbours too: With the tsunamis having killed 54,000 people across Asia, the Central Government on Tuesday turned its focus towards checking epidemics and rehabilitation.

IA to evacuate people from Port Blair: Carrying on with the relief work the public sector domestic airlines, Indian Airlines today evacuated over 950 persons from the Tsunami-hit Port Blair region by operating eight flights from Chennai and Kolkata. In view of the large number of people still stranded in Port Blair, the airlines is planning to operate as many as 15 flights to island tomorrow. 

'No threat of radiation; Kalpakkam safe': The Government on Tuesday scotched all speculative reports and apprehensions about the safety of the nuclear power plant in Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, in the wake of the tsunami disaster, saying it was "safe" and there was no threat of radiation.

RV contributes to relief fund:
The former President, R. Venkataraman, today donated Rs. 25,000 towards The Hindu Relief Fund for the victims of the tsunami strike in India. 

Rs 5 crore from Infosys: Infosys Technologies on Tuesday announced a contribution of Rs 5 crore to the National Relief Fund.

16 Territorial Army jawans killed in Tripura: In one of the biggest militant strikes in recent years in Tripura, the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura guerillas mowed down 17 people, including 16 Territorial Army jawans, and shot at two others at Dangabari in South Tripura District today.
