high suicide rate

Call it a fallout of violence or a corollary of the events, trouble-torn Kashmir is fast becoming
a land of
suicides. Suicides and suicidal tendencies among Kashmiri male and female youth have reached a dangerous level in the valley.
Experts say if this rot is not stemmed, the situation will go out of control and Kashmir will turn into a land of suicides.
Conservative figures reveal that 20,000 people had attempted suicide during the 14 years of turmoil in the valley. About 3,000 of them had died. Around three suicide deaths and two attempted suicide cases are reported every week in urban areas while in rural areas most of the suicides go unreported.
\93I can call it a fallout of violence. In the 14 years of turmoil, the people have grown very weak economically and emotionally. The economic pressure coupled with the fear-factor has developed suicidal tendencies among the youth. With the result the suicidal deaths in Kashmir are increasing,\94 said Dr Bashir Ahmad Dabla, head of the Department of Sociology at University of Kashmir.
