PM offers peaceful, honourable
settlement of Naga issues

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today told the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) leadership that the Centre favoured a \93mutually acceptable and honourable\94 solution to the decades-old problem in Nagaland.

\93Our government will make sincere effort to find an honourable way out,\94 Dr Manmohan Singh told the visiting NSCN (I-M) Chairman Isak Chishi Swu and General Secretary T. Muivah, who called on him at his Race Course Road residence.

The Prime Minister accorded a warm welcome to the two Naga leaders, who are here to carry forward the Naga Peace Process though dialogue on \93substantive issues\94, and said that his government was committed to ensure that the Naga people live a \93life of dignity\94.

During their 30-minute meeting with Dr Manmohan Singh, the Naga leaders emphasised that \93a solution cannot be found in violence and blood\94.

Subsequently, at a meeting with the Union Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, the leaders expressed confidence in Indian leadership and said \93the whole world is seeking peace. So we also want peaceful solution.\94



Madras HC dismisses Kanchi seer's bail plea again: Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail petition filed by Kanchi Acharya Jayendra Saraswati in the Sankararaman murder case. Dismissing the bail plea for the second time, Mr Justice R Balasubramanian said that Sec 437(1)(1) of Cr PC came in the way of considering the bail application under Sec 439 of Cr PC and dismissed the petiton. During the course of the arguments, senior counsel K T S Tulsi, appearing for the prosecution, submitted that Sec 437(1)(1) said no person should be granted bail when there were reasonable grounds to believe the guilt of the person for offences punishable with death or a life sentence.

The police are reportedly in the process of executing a non-bailable warrant against Usha had allegedly cheated the SBI on the pretext of starting a cement brick factory near Srikalahasti. Usha was last week interrogated about her "links" with the Kanchi seer.

The manager of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam has made clear the mutt's position on charges made against the seer. He quotes the arrested Shankaracharya:
 \93Nobody is above the law of our country. Let truth prevail,
and the guilty be punished.\94 The manager's statement also urges devotees not to despair: "Frankly," it says,  "what matters most is your devotion and willingness to come out and do something.  Devotees (especially those in far off lands) feel helpless because they think, all they can do is to protest, pray and send money.  There is no need for any one to despair in this manner."
