turns down Japan's invitation to join non-proliferation treaty

India rejected Japan\92s renewed call to join the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty saying it was "unfair and unacceptable".
New Delhi\92s stand was conveyed to visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi when she emphasised the importance of nuclear disarmament and
called for the participation of India as well as Pakistan in NPT and CTBT regimes.
Kawaguchi, who called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and had meetings with External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh, national security adviser J N Dixit and leader of opposition L K Advani, also stressed the need for these two countries to adhere to the international code of conduct relating to missile technology and production.
The Indian side said it regarded the NPT as an "unfair and discriminatory treaty" and that in its current shape it was "simply unacceptable".
