The government wants a consensus on banning criminals from entering
politics. Home minister Shivraj Patil said he wanted to stop
"criminally-inclined persons" from contesting elections.
"But in what fashion that has to be done has to be decided by all of us together,''
he said. He plans to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the
ban.
Going into the complexities of the problem and the practical difficulties
involved in carrying out the Election Commission's suggestions on
electoral reforms, he said "Unless we develop a consensus, it is not going to happen.''
Patil said if a person was not allowed to contest on the grounds that a case had been filed against him or her, then
"all good politicians'' would invite a flurry of cases against them from opponents.
