India is a place known for its saints and scholars. Some of the greatest contemporary people who have impacted the way the world worked, thought, lived and acted were Indians. The first to come to mind is Mahatma Gandhi. This diminutive man bore gigantic stature and evolved one of the most radical ideas of his times: passive resistance. His Civil Disobedience became the inspiration for Martin Luther King Jr. who spearheaded the emancipation of the Blacks in The United States.

Swami Vivekananda was another dynamic outspoken Indian who spread the message of finding inner peace and community brotherhood to the West at the conference of World Religions. Aurobindo, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Yogananda and other such great souls inspired people all over the globe with their philosophy and messages of love.

C.V. Raman (Chandrashekar Venkata Raman) won the Nobel Prize for Physics and gave the world the Raman effect. Chandrashekar Subrahmanyam (Astrophysicist, Nobel laureate 1983) defined the “Chandrashekar Limit”. Amartya Sen won the Nobel Prize for Economics and Hargobind Khorana has won the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his research in genetics.

Women have shared equal stage with the men in this country. Indira Gandhi was our prime minister and a stateswoman to contend with. Her foresight pushed India’s scientific agenda to play on par with the developed west. Mother Teresa, Mirra Alfassa or the “Mother” of Pondicherry, Ma Ananda Mayi, and Ma Amritanandamayi continue to embrace people with their messages of comforting love. Women in India participate in a vital manner, embracing many facets of public life. DKPattammal and MS Subbulakshmi broke barriers of women’s roles in society to become musicians whose voices will live forever. At a remote and rural level, the local female Panchayat chief demonstrates that women are truly emancipated at the grass root level, taking control of local politics and healthcare.

These contemporary beacons who illuminate our paths with their knowledge rise from a tradition of strength and learning. Adi Shankara, Buddha, Mahavira, forged paths of spiritual development. Raja Raja Chola had ambassadors to the Far East and Nalanda in Bihar was the center of learning, the first University of its kind to educate scholars of both genders.
