Legislative Assembly

Orissa became a separate province on the 1st day of April, 1936 by Government of India (Constitution of Orissa) Order, 1936. It comprised portions of the then Bihar and Orissa Province, Madras Presidency and the Central Provinces.

The province of Orissa was placed under the personal Rule of the Governor till the end of March, 1937. An Advisory Council consisting of 20 persons was formed to advise the Governor on the administration of the provinces.

The Orissa Legislative Assembly consists of 147 members. The life of the Assembly is 5 years from the date appointed for its first meeting beginning with the address of the Governor under Article 176 (1), unless sooner dissolved. The expiry of the said period of 5 years operates as a dissolution of the Assembly.

Chief Minister

Shri Naveen Patnaik is the Chief Minister of Orissa state.  He is affiliated to the Biju Janata Dal, named after his father, Biju Patnaik - former Chief Minister of Orissa.
