In a welcome development, the Government of Nepal (GoN) seems to have reached an understanding with the Maoists where the terrorists will be confined to cantonments in 7 locations and their arms escrowed in designated places. While the Maoist leadership will have the keys to these locks, close circuit cameras and sensors will be used to monitor the locks and cantonments. Further, a UN monitoring squad will also be present at these cantonments.

A Prime Minister’s advisor was quoted saying that a “summit” between the members of the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) will discuss this agreement and make the contents public. However, some aspects of the deal were revealed such as the composition of the interim cabinet that will lead the constituent Assembly and Girija Prasad Koirala is expected to continue as Prime Minister. The fate of the monarchy will be determined by that body.
