Following unconfirmed reports of 2 Keralities being allegedly harassed by Maldives locals, 3 unidentified gangs attacked 6 houses in Thiruvanathapuram around midnight, occupied by Maldivian nations who are students and patients. While the actions of the miscreants are small such as breaking windshields of cars, the incident itself has shattered the confidence of Maldivian nations prompting them to prefer “Kochi, Madurai, or Chennai.”

Police officials say that they suspect either a Maharashtra based political organization that has protested the alleged harassment of Keralities in Maldives and local Hotel owners who see Maldives residents as a business threat as they do house compatriots as paying guests. However, these foreigners allege that they are increasingly becoming soft targets of criminal elements.

While foreign nationals need to be given protection by the state, it is also important that they are required to comply with Indian laws. Several years ago, large hordes of Iranian students harassed usually friendly population in Chennai. However, locals took matters in their own hands when a girl was allegedly raped by these “students” who permanently lived in these houses to avoid being drafted into the Iran-Iraq war. After coordinated attacks on their houses, these unwelcome foreigners left and security and peace returned to the area. In modern days of terrorism, unregulated activity of foreigners may invite attention of terrorist groups who can use these unofficial hotels and lodges to infiltrate India unnoticed.

Police have to ensure that these foreigners are not running a business while claiming to be students or medical patients. If they do, they have to conform to Indian laws.
