The newly reinstated Nepal Prime Minister G P Koirala will travel to New Delhi
on Wednesday seeking India's cooperation in restoring peace, assistance for
economic reconstruction, and resolving the insurgency that is tearing his
country apart. Koirala was invited to India by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The talks between the two leaders will mainly focus on bringing the Maoists
into the political mainstream, holding constituent assembly election and
seeking India's economic assistance in reconstruction and rehabilitation of the
insurgency-torn country, official sources said. The two nations will be careful
to look only at issues that are within their control and solvable and sidestep
most contentious issues. They may also discuss India’s idea of involving the UN
to resolve the terrorism from Mao’s philosophy. Indian communist leaders have
been saying that the terrorists can be brought into the mainstream with special
packages.
The one contentious issue that will be discussed is the release of about 140
Nepalese Maoist from Indian jails. The Indian Government must ensure that it
does not get sucked into the Nepal vortex by releasing all terrorist elements
from jails. It is understandable that release of younger and deluded newbie
ones, but releasing hardened criminals would be like helping start a Nepal
based Jaish-e-Mohammed or Lashkar-e-Toiba.
