Walking for Peace

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh joined 50 other world leaders in paying rich tributes to the Soviet people's sacrifice. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin asked the world to give up violence and work for peace. India, a part of the victorious Alliance that defeated fascism, lost 36000 soldiers and participated widely in the Allied campaigns in Africa, Middle East, and against the Japanese invasion in Myanmar (then Burma).

In bilateral discussions with the Russian Prime Minister, Dr. Singh came up with the idea of a Joint Working Group (JWG) to work out means by which bilateral trade can be increased. Mr. Putin had pointed out that the trade levels are well below potential.

To increase civilian cooperation between the two countries, Dr. Singh allayed Russian fears of nuclear controls in place by pointing out to a new legislation to be tabled this Parliamentary session. The Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prevention of Unlawful Activities) Bill, 2005 will strengthen India's non-proliferation framework.

Federal Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav's allegation against the Election Commission turned against him when the ruling Central Government coalition called United Progressive Alliance (UPA) distanced itself from his allegations.

The Federal Law Minister said that the document purportedly written by a senior IAS officer (posted as an observer to Bihar a year ago) was a fake. Except for the communists and its supporting newspapers called for Yadav's resignation. Many political parties and political commentators lamented that Yadav was a political disease. Others charged him with sensationalism to circumvent his corruption and ineptitude in Bihar and incompetence as a Railway Minister.

Meanwhile, the Chief Election Commissioner and the two other Commissioners met the Indian President Abdul Kalam to brief him on a dangers of this allegation to the Constitutional body and democratic integrity of India.
