India pushes for UN reforms

Pitching for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations reflecting current global realities, India today
backed UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan\92s view that consensus should not lead to inaction or putting off decisions on any issue.
New Delhi\92s views were conveyed to Annan during his discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh here. India highlighted the need for comprehensive UN reforms, including expansion of the Security Council.
External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters here that India agreed with Annan\92s view that UN reforms should be finalised by September this year.
The leaders also shared the view that consensus should not be allowed to become a reason for \91\91inaction\92\92. They took note that very often in the UN, consensus became co-terminus with \91\91unanimity\92\92. As a result, consensus had become an excuse for inaction.
Mr Enoki said Mr Koizumi would convey to the Indian leadership that development of bilateral relations is important, "not merely for the sake of mutual benefit but for the stability and prosperity of entire Asia," and emphasise that, "our relationship has enhanced significance not just in the bilateral context but in the regional and global contexts as well."
