Medical advice through
satellite
will be offered soon, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G Madhavan Nair said on Thursday.
Currently, Visveswaraiah University in Bangalore is connected to 100 engineering colleges. Students
are being taught through the satellite using video-conferencing, Mr Nair said at Tenali on Wednesday after receiving the prestigious Nayudamma Memorial Award.
ISRO will join hands with 20 agencies to fully utilise EDUSAT\92s capacity to impart education to students in remote areas. The backward Chamarajnagar district in Karnataka has been selected to teach 50,000 schools, he said.
Referring to telemedicine, Nair said 20 superspecialty hospitals in metropolitan cities have been selected to connect with 80 district hospitals in the country and provide expert medical advice to people in the rural areas. People in the distant north-eastern region, Andaman and Nicobar islands and Jammu and Kashmir have benefited from the programme. The facility proved very useful when the tsunami struck the Indian coast, he added.
