Shamed Congress finds
scapegoat in Governor

What is India News Service, Friday, 4 March 2005, 1300 hrs IST

Developments in Jharkhand had Delhi in turmoil on Thursday with President A P J Abdul Kalam taking the unprecedented step of summoning Governor Syed Sibtey Razi while the BJP and its allies, denied the chance to return to power in the state despite the numbers, paralysed Parliament over the manner in which JMM chief Shibu Soren was sworn-in as Chief Minister.

Around the time Sibtey Razi was flying to Delhi, L K Advani and other BJP leaders reached Rashtrapati Bhavan to parade 41 MLAs, dangling number tags, to prove they enjoyed the majority in an Assembly of 81 members. According to Advani, Kalam assured them that he would do whatever he could after meeting the Governor on Friday.

O
ne-time Sanjay Gandhi loyalist, minor Shia leader, useful in his native Rae Bareli to generations of Gandhis who have sought election there: Syed Sibtey Razi, the Jharkhand Governor, is the quintessential \91\91loyalist\92\92 Congressman. In other words, he\92s the hanger-on who made it good.

The man who NDA MLAs say was very abrupt when they met him at the Ranchi Raj Bhavan earlier this week, entered politics on the strength of, ironically, his oratory. Right from his days in Lucknow\92s Shia College, oldtimers here say, Razi was known for his oratory.

At the AICC headquarters in Delhi, though, his claim to fame was his native Jais, part of Rae Bareli district and of Amethi parliamentary constituency. Borough of the Gandhi dynasty, Amethi is now Rahul Gandhi\92s seat.

Razi came into serious politics through the Youth Congress, at the behest of Sanjay Gandhi, the Family\92s first MP from Amethi. Sanjay clearly took a fancy for him. Remembers Siraj Mehndi, Congress MLC, \91\91Sanjay Gandhi had made it clear that Sibtey Razi should set the tone in public meetings, before he (Sanjay) took the mike.
