The Federal cabinet approved Indian's accession to the Madrid Protocol on International Registration of Marks to provide better and extensive protection abroad for Indian marks owners. The government will initiate appropriate changes to the Trade Marks Act of 1999 and have the Parliament pass the bill.
Administered by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the protocol will allow faster registration of Indian trade marks worldwide, further confidence in India's commitment to protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), and facilitate franchising and licensing of trade marks and associated technologies globally.
