   India on GLONASS GPS

  After failing to secure a berth in the US and European Global Positioning Systems (GPS) because it failed to get guarantees of uninterrupted service contract, India gained access to the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS).

After failing to secure a berth in the US and European Global Positioning Systems (GPS) because it failed to get guarantees of uninterrupted service contract, India gained access to the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). India had earlier widened discussions with EU’s Galileo project but backed away being unconvinced on control over the system it owns. Besides, China is also part of Galileo and apparently the firewalling between owners was not clear cut enough to assuage Indian concerns.

India has been seeking a GPS system to bolster commercial, social, and military applications to track assets, vehicles, operational efficiency, and deal with natural disaster
