The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is starting a Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) in its campus in Bangalore and expected to become the most elite laboratory for defense research and development (R&D). In November 2000, R&D groups working on Command Control Communication and Intelligence Systems, Communications and Networking, and Communication Secrecy in Electronics and Radar Development Establishment were merged with CAIR.
CAIR has already developed and delivered a number of Information Systems, Communication Systems, and Security Systems and worked on Intelligent Systems technologies. Currently, it is working on several products dealing with tactical communication, secure communication, data mining tools using Artificial Intelligence & Neural Networks, virtual reality, speech signal processing, and wheel-based and legged robots. Some of its technologies have been adapted for civilian use in medicine, education, and helping the physically handicapped.
