A top UN official appealed to the Sri Lankan Government (SLG) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to stop their fighting as the citizens “continue to suffer deeply” and the recent civilian death from SLG air attack is causing “deepest concern.” U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Acting Emergency Relief Coordinator Margareta Wahlström said that “both sides of the conflict” should “fulfill their obligations under international law to protect civilians” and faulted both for having fallen “short in this duty.”
