Continuing with a series of briefings, British intelligence officials said that they are convinced that the al Qaeda is planning a nuclear attack on the UK and cited “an awful lot of chatter” on jihadi websites to bolster their claim. They said several web sites have expressed desire to procure chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons in addition to a series of economically debilitating attacks (as revealed by Dhiren Barot).

A senior Foreign Office counter-terrorism spokesperson said that he had “No doubt at all” that there is “aspiration,” the “attempt to get material,” and the “attempt to get technology.” His assertion was bolstered by MI5, UK ’s topmost counter-terrorism spy outfit, Director Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller’s revelation that they were monitoring and investigating 30 active plots that “lead back to Pakistan .”

Such revelations have resulted in a considered extension to laws that allow prolonged detention of suspected terrorists without charge. Such threats have also prompted the US and Russia to sign tough counter-proliferation measures. Specifically, it is aimed to stop the smuggling of “dirty bomb” material that can be used to cause panic among the population and spread low-levels of radiation.

While some doubt the viability of the “dirty bomb” theory on technical grounds, others say that al Qaeda’s plans have graduated on a large-scale economically debilitating attack on UK that would essentially cripple the West and drive global economies into chaos. While the disgraced Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan’s network has since been dis-assembled, many fear that informal or more secretive networks with covert support from Pakistan or North Korea may exist. This is bolstered by findings by counter-terrorism experts that many Britons (of Pakistani origin) have traveled to Pakistan for terrorism activity and carrying large amount of cash
