Following a request by the Ethiopian Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry , India is considering a proposal by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education to send a 4-member team to salinity and give technical advice to boost production.

India also expressed willingness to cooperate in survey of research potential, training personnel in fishing methods and food processing technology, and share expertise in dairy development. Currently, India has a small agricultural trade surplus with Ethiopia with exports and imports amounting to USD 5.79 and USD 2.34 respectively. India exports paper, wood products, rice, and dairy products while importing pulses and spices.

Meanwhile, faced by shortages of wheat, pulses, and rice, India is going through major Agricultural rethink itself. The Agriculture Summit 2006 is a major event aimed to create awareness among farmers about opportunities in farming and agricultural processing. The event will see a congregation of farmers, retailers, investors, policy makers, agriculture scientists, and corporate representatives to discuss contemporary issues facing this sector. State Governments will also be able to showcase their farmers, technology, success stories, and best practices. An ostensible goal of the two-day Summit is to accelerate agricultural reform, focus on raising farm income, provide counseling to manage risk, create awareness of global competition, and discover ways to create new jobs. In addition, there will also be focused discussion on grain balance and food security, private investment in marketing infrastructure, servicing the Indian consumer and retailing, public private partnership in technology development and delivery, mitigating farmers’ risk through crop insurance and future market
