Report Says Pak Generals are Barons

  • Newsline report accuses Pakistan of aggrandizing land for Army generals
  • Pakistan Army denies this charge saying they bought it with their salaries

A Newsline report said that Pakistan continues the British tradition of rewarding armed forces with land allotments making Pakistani Army generals new "land barons" controlling 12 million acres of prime agricultural land worth over Rs 700 billion. According to this report, Army controls 12% of the country’s land area out 62% of which is in agriculturally rich Punjab. Apparently, Army generals get agricultural and urban land as motivational allotments.

Pakistan Defense spokesman trashed the report denying that the army is a major real estate player. He said that military personnel acquire property through self-help housing societies “collected from the salaries.”
