FIEO Calls for More Attention to Food Processing

In yet another shocking case of a “social worker” taking advantage of children, Mumbai police arrested a nun called Mother Anandi Joseph for conspiring with a pastor called John Alexander to rape a minor child and physically abusing them frequently.

A teacher who worked at the Wings of Refuge Childcare center, Kavita Bansode, told the police that the Pastor and the nun regularly beat up the 70 odd orphaned children and mentioned the case of the minor girl. Fearing that Alexander will do something bad to her too, the victim’s sister ran away from the orphanage to Bansode’s home. They later told the police that Joseph had beaten them badly when they complained about the incident asking them not to complain about a “social worker.”

Alexander has run away from the center to Tamil Nadu and the Mumbai police have sent a team to Chennai to trace him down. Joseph and Alexander have been running the center for the last 9 years.

The Supreme Court recently ruled that the testimony of a rape victim is suffice for conviction of a rape accused. The National Human Rights Commission alerted the nation that despite strong laws, lax police implementation has facilitated the growth of flesh trade in India that is valued at USD 8 billion  and that unlike Thailand or Sri Lanka the issue is not being discussed. While child labor issue is being handled well, child abuse is not. Recently, two Britons ran an orphanage and abused children till they were extradited from Britain.
