The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)
approved several indigenous products
for the defense forces including 20
Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH)
called Dhruv and 7 radar systems. It
also approved upgrade of Russian made
130mm artillery to 155mm by an Israeli
company. In another move that will
benefit 9 states and 76 districts, the
CCS approved continued Security
Related Expenditure to fight naxals.
While the amounts for these purchases are
not high compared to multi-billion
dollar fighter aircraft, submarines,
and tank purchases, it is significant
in symbolism. This is the first time
that India is spending money buying
indigenously developed advanced
systems such as helicopters and
radars. While these products have been
extensively tested internally, they
are not yet battle tested. This marks
a level of confidence on Indian goods
that the country has not seen in a
while.
Dhruv is designed and manufactured by the Hindustan
Aeronautics Limited. The Special vehicle to carry the
150 mm guns is designed and manufactured by the Bharat
Earth Movers Ltd. The radar systems is designed and
manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited. All three
are Bangalore based companies.
