On receiving intelligence on a gathering
on Maoist terrorists in Central Nepal,
in a move to avenge the murder of 13
of their colleagues, the Royal Nepal
Army (RNA) launched a surprising
attack killing more than 20
terrorists. While Maoists may have
lost in this operation, they are
gaining the upper hand in many other
places.
With the political parties succumbing to
American pressure not to support the
terrorist group's call to blockade the
Katmandu Valley, the Maoists gave up
that plan but attacked a RNA patrol
killing 13 soldiers. They also
attacked security posts, looting
banks, and patrols bringing the number
of kills to a steady trickle. The
strategy is to bring the number of
soldiers killed to a steady trickle
and chip away at the morale and strike
capability of the RNA.
When pursued, they cross over into India, which refuses to
take sides and also refuses to stop the crossover. The
RNA claims to have sealed the border. However, without
active Indian support, this is most likely an empty
claim.
With this unabated violence, King Gnanendra has been
vacationing in scenic Pokhara waiting for the monsoons
to reduce terrorist operations and opposition
political activity. He is adamant to hold
Parliamentary elections in April 2007 even though his
February local elections were a dismal failure.
