Issues
The WhatisIndia
database, in the making since 1996, is organized at two levels. The
first level is made up of about 30 broad categories (such as
Democracy, Health, Religion, Science and Technology), while the
second contains more detailed categories (for instance, you will
find an individual page for each major religion in India).
How
the database works: A custom-built software
program culls information from multiple sources. An editorial eye
first scans news sources, including newspapers and magazines from
across the world, and then sets the program to fetch stories
relevant to India. Two people on the desk scan the stories and fine-tune
the classification. The database is finally put online,
under easy heads, for WhatisIndia readers. Our desk strives to
present information in the best possible manner, and welcomes
suggestions on organizing and presenting the database better. The
database is updated every day.
What
you will find here: Each page represents a
topic or an issue. Topics are broad categories, while issues are
narrower in focus. Top stories in the database appear when you
choose a page by clicking on it. You can follow links on the right
of the page to find more information. Some are internal links -- we
call them WhatisIndia links -- while others are external ones. (On
the Bureaucracy page, you will find internal links to our Democracy
and Elections pages, while the external links lead you to the home
pages of the central government secretariat and other important
government offices).
