In 1884, at the annual convention of the Theosophical Society at Adyar in Madras, Mr. Allan Octavian Hume laid bare to his friends his plan to organize the Congress.  The first session, of the Congress took place in Bombay on the 28th December 1885, with Mr. W. C. Bnnerjee, the doyen of the Calcutta Bar in the chair.  72 delegates came from different parts of the country and most important among them were Dadabhai Naoroji, Ranade, Pherozeshah Mehta K.T. Telang, Dinshaw Wacha, etc.

The Indian National Congress, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, Sadar Vallabhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, etc. led the country to independence in 1947.

The Congress (I) was born in 1978, after a split in the INC over leadership issues. The party has remained one of the main political players in India.  It formed government at the Center in 1991, under Shri P V Narasimha Rao, and initiated the economic reforms.  In May 2004, Congress and its allies stormed back to power, under the leadership of Ms. Sonia Gandhi and replaced the BJP-led NDA.  The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), has Dr. Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister.
