Outlook

Charting a new course for India's army
With a new army chief set to take over, 2005 promises to be a year of significant change for India's military. A new counter-terrorism doctrine has already been adopted and, taking into consideration geopolitical concerns, plans to modernize India's military technology on the basis of speed and precision are in the works. It has not gone unnoticed, however, that these plans are similar to Washington's military-think. By RAMTANU MAITRA

Qaid-e-Azam Jinnah, Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru will always be remembered, though for different reasons. Jinnah is the only leader who single-handedly created a new country for Muslims. No wonder, Beverley Nichols, a distinguished British journalist, wrote about him: "The most important man in Asia is 67, tall, thin and elegant, with a monocle on a grey silk cord, and a stiff white collar which he wears in the hottest weather".
