More HIV Treatment Centers

 

The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) announced that it has increased the number of free anti-retroviral treatment (ART) centers from 54 to 91 complete with specially trained doctors, counselors, and laboratory technicians.

The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) announced that it has increased the number of free anti-retroviral treatment (ART) centers from 54 to 91 complete with specially trained doctors, counselors, and laboratory technicians. These and an additional 9 centers will be capable of treating and monitoring 85,000 patients up from current capacity of 40,000 patients.

The ART treatment involves creating a cocktail of three drugs for patients in advanced stage of infection. While the cocktail does not cure the infection, it suppresses multiplication of virus and reduces the chance of accidental spread. It also greatly enhances the quality of life of patients and prolongs the life span. The ART treatment relies a lot on sustained medication and these centers will provide counseling to patients allowing them to be deal with issues that they face and also to infuse a culture of continuity in treatment.

There are 13 ART centers in Tamil Nadu (TN) and Maharashtra, Karnataka has 11, Andhra Pradesh (AP) 10, and Kerala 4 centers
