In an ominous note, the fourth conference of the Coordination Committee of Maoist Parties and Organizations of South Asia (CCOMPOSA) in Nepal resolved to better coordinate to turn South Asia “into a flaming field of people’s upsurges.” The Maoist movement in South Asia feels victorious after divesting King Gnanendra off powers with some aggressive negotiating with weak Nepali political parties and a unification of fractional parties in India . Adding impetus to the movement, the ultra left the Communist Party of Ceylon (Maoist) group from Sri Lanka also participated but did not sign the declaration and therefore ostensibly an “observer.”
The conclusion of the meeting has exposed the duplicity of the Nepali Maoists who continued to aver that they will not coordinate or cooperate with other rabid movements in the South Asia . In variance to its public stance, the Nepali Maoists have strongly supported the declaration to “deepen and extend the links” with other “genuine Maoists of the region” and “increase the coordination to fight” the Governments in “respective countries.”
While Maoist movements often portray themselves as champions of the poor and oppressed and state that their fight is against the injustice of the rich, invariably their target is the Government and the security forces. Recognizing this, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had alerted the Naxal movement in India as the most dangerous threat to Indian security.
The success of the Nepali Maoist movement due to inept and selfish handling by Gnanendra has created a “burning cauldron” of movements in Bangladesh , Bhutan , and Sri Lanka . The resolution has called for groups in different countries to “draw closer” and “assist their respective struggles.” As usual, the US and India were a favored target of diatribe saying that the “ US imperialism” is “guiding the Indian expansionist rulers.”
The biggest danger for India is the linking of Maoist and Islamic terrorists united for their hatred for India , albeit for different reasons. If successful, the Naxal corridor from Uttar Pradesh to Karnataka will be a terrorist corridor facilitating the free flow of terrorists from Afghanistan to the economically productive South.
