A highly embarrassed Health Minister Anbumani Ramdoss withdrew the
controversial order
to dismiss All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Dr. P. Venugopal but counsel said that the Government would file fresh charges later. The Delhi High Court (DHC) had ordered a stay on the dismissal and the case is due to for hearing on August 17, but Ramdoss had filed a case seeking the reinstatement of the dismissal.
Several eminent lawyers had uncharitable things to say about the Government, while doctors at AIIMS campus celebrated the embarrassment of the unpopular Minister and expressed their faith in the Judiciary.
The issue here is not the embarrassment of the Minister or the faith in Judiciary. A Minister had dismissed a pre-eminent doctor who is the Director of the most advanced medical institution in the nation for incompetence. Now, he withdraws the case against the Director but has polluted the system and created negativism throughout obviously conceding that he was wrong in either his assessment or the process followed. The disruption of work, the inconvenience to the public, the negative attention on this needless issue, must be addressed.
There must be political accountability.
