While the final formal vote for the position of Secretary General (SG) will be
in late September or early October, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
is expected to organize a “straw poll” to gauge support for different
candidates. Many members actually prefer the vote to be over in August so the
SG-elect could meet world leaders when they come to New York for the UN General
Assembly's annual session.
Currently, the candidates in fray are Shashi Tharoor nominated by India,
Jayantha Dhanapala nominated by Sri Lanka, and Surakiart Sathirathai nominated
by Thailand. However, more names could be nominated in the intervening period
as there is no minimum time limit for a member state nominating its own
candidate and names can be introduced till the end of the process.
