Confusion about veracity of reports
India became the fifth country in the world to host more than 100 million
mobile subscribers and also has the fastest growth rate-- China has the most
with 404 million subscribers, the US 185 million, Japan 150 million, and Russia
140 million. Other countries like Germany, Italy, the UK and Brazil lag behind
in the top-10 list.
In absolute numbers, India is the second fastest with 4 million new users
added every month. While China added about 24 million new mobile users since
January 2006, Indian operators have added close to 20 million. The Government
wants 500 million telephone subscribers by 2010.
There is some confusion on whether these numbers were exaggerated. Currently,
vendors count the number of SIM cards sold to account for users and this may
include inactive users. A new system will count only the active users and that
will be the metric that should tracked.
