An Islamic militia, along the lines of Taliban in Afghanistan, claimed that it
has seized Mogadishu after weeks of gory fighting capping 15 years of anarchy
in Somalia. Chairman of the Islamic Courts Union Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed said
his forces have overrun a secular alliance of warlords, believed to be
supported by the US. Analysts fear that Somalia could follow the path of
Taliban and into the hands of al-Qaeda.
After years of stalemate, the recent surge of violence started last month
resulting in the death of more than 300 people and wounding 1,700; most of
these are thought to be civilians.
The US has not confirmed or denied that they support the defeated alliance but
said that they will fight those who sponsor terrorism and support those who
will fight terrorism.
The United Nations had backed an interim Government which failed to establish
control from its base in Baidoa.
