Angered by the extension of the house arrest of Opposition leader Aung Sang
Suu Kyi in Myanmar, the US is planning to raise a resolution in the United
Nations Security Council (UNSC) demanding the immediate release of
incarcerated opposition leaders.
A State Department Spokesman said that the US was very concerned at the
“unjustifiable detention of a great champion of democracy.” He also claimed
that the “economic, political, and public health situation” in Myanmar has
“deteriorated to the point where the regimes activities and repression of
political activists now poses a threat to the stability, peace, and security
of the region.”
The US move will most likely be resisted by China, which has oil rights and
a naval base on Myanmar territory, Russia which is trying to develop
relations with Myanmar, and Japan which has Buddhist links with that nation.
China and Russia have veto rights while Japan does not.
