Pakistan Plans to Buy Swedish AWACS

To upgrade its air surveillance, Pakistan has approved the purchase of Swedish Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) to counter Indian contract to buy the Falcon system from Israel.

Pakistan acknowledged gaps in its airborne surveillance and asserted that the USD 1 billion order was required for the effectiveness of the Pakistan Air Force. It did not say how many AWACS it would buy although it congratulated its negotiators for getting a “good and comprehensive deal.”

The proposed AWACS have “Erie Eye” radar systems mounted on special planes made by Swedish company Saab. Another Swedish company, Ericsson is expected to provide the surveillance equipment.
