In its annual report of 2006, Amnesty
International (AI) accused the US of
gross human rights violations and
double standards in its fight against
terrorism and depreciated their
credibility for not demanding more of
allies engaging in abuses in fear of
losing them. AI cited US base in
Guantanomo Bay where prisoners were
kept in unhealthy conditions for
extended periods of time without any
formal charge against them.
AI did not have nice things to say
about European nations, who often
claim to be major proponents of human
rights, for trying to wiggle out of
legal requirements.
AI cited energy-hungry China for
investing in countries with poor human
rights records in order to gain access
to oil and natural gas and Russian
excesses in Chechnya.
AI chief Irene Khan said that
“powerful nations are playing a
dangerous game with human rights.”
