Bangladesh is planning to enact a new law along the lines of hated Special Powers Act to grant police draconian powers to curb terrorism gripping the country and fast slipping into India.
Islamic fundamentalist parties criticize the move saying that it is being initiated at the instance of international donor nations. However, Law Ministry and police officials say that existing laws are insufficient to deal with rapidly mutating forms of terrorism handicapping their effectiveness against individuals, groups, and political parties.
Opposition Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina castigated the Government alliance partners Jamat-i-Islami and Islami Oikya Jote as instigators and perpetrators of terrorism. Hasina says that the new law is a ploy that will be used by the Government against opposition and dissenting voices.
The Law Minister disagrees and promised that his Government will get a draft into the June session of the Parliament.
