IAEA Reports Non-Compliance, Iran Defiant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported back to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that Iran has not complied with its earlier diktat to suspend nuclear enrichment and Iran has publicly sworn that it will resist the UNSC. The so-called “Permanent” members of the UNSC are set to meet along with Germany in Paris seeking to derive consensus on the next steps available to them. The US and EU hope that Russia and China will agree with their position that a strong legally binding resolution is required to curb Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

However, this is a wish that may not be granted. China forswears that it is against “all forms of violence” and opposes military action and preaches diplomacy. Russia is closer to the West’s position but is asking for a “smoking gun” which the West will not be able to deliver. So far, there is plenty of circumstantial evidence implicating Iran’s bid to develop nuclear weapons but the IAEA has so far not been able to produce the “smoking gun.” Russia and China argue that sanctions may encourage Iran to follow through with its threat of terminating IAEA snap and unannounced supervision providing it the cover it desperately needs to operate with impunity..

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has bluntly warned the US of global retaliation if it pursues military options against his country. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly warned that his country will unleash its missile arsenal on Israel and occupational forces in Iraq, large numbers of suicide bombers on Western civilian targets, and sink oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.

Iran claims that, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation, it is entitled to enrich uranium and that the opposition from the West is prejudiced against it and aimed at ousting the country’s ruling clerics..
